A special THE NAMESAKE conversation between the director Mira Nair and the novelist Jhumpa Lahiri.
I like the movie. Though there are some minor changes from the plot of the novel, but it is really touching. It expresses the feelings of every Indian diaspora, especially the POI or NRI of first generation
Probably The Best Mira Nair And Jhumpa Lahiri In The World.

The best part of the movie is how the viewer sees the plot thru the
eyes of both the parents and the child at various times.
His fathers death was central to the awakening of Gogol. Kal has excelled
in those scenes. Main stream bollywood would have struggled to pull
that scene off. The key to his performance is Kalpen trying to live his
part for months after reading this book many times over.
I saw the film in DVD and was completely engrossed in the story and characters. I thought the cinematography and music along w/ the great acting of Tabu and Irfan Khan propelled the story. Mira Nair is a wonderful director and always knows how to get the best performances. I love her brand of storytelling.
I will definitely read the book now.
A heartfelt film for anyone... I laughed and I must say, I cried. The film managed to never stay too low or high. It was a beautiful journey and I feel enriched to have seen it. Kudos to the cast and crew!

I was laughed, cried, and adored this movie. The message of kinship and the collaborative journey we take echoes throughout the film. This is the first film I have seen in a very long time that I can absolutely recommend to my friends. Bravo Mira Nair.

This film was so profound. As a Black woman with Indian ties, I could relate to Gogol. I hated my name, but I was named for my father since no male children bore his name- but I am a woman. So I had to live with teasing of my name. When I expressed my desire to change my name to a suitable, mor feminine name; my father was crushed. My father dies like Gogol's father and I had so many regrets, as well. I laughed when Ashima and Ashoke met. I cried and felt for Ashima when Ashoke died. I LOVED this movie as I love all of Mira Nair's films. GREAT JOB!
Very nice movie and acting of Tabbu and irfan also

A very touching and respectable movie.
I would highly recommend for everyone to see.
It has family values, laughter and tears. Hats off Mira and Jhumpa.

I loved the DVD. Jhumpha Lahiri did a great job, and makes the SKHS Class of 1985 very proud. May there be many more successful books and movies in your future, Jhumpa!

Have just seen the film on the plane. Excellent film, very moving, and the actors are just amazing in their interpretation. I am sure it will win awards. Can't wait for the DVD and the to read the book. Will look out for it in Australia. Thanks.
Wow! You sexy Indians, both old and new generations...I loved it.
Andrea - Seattle
I loved the movie - very true to the book. Unfortunately I saw it in an independent theater. I hope and trust it will be shown in the major theaters for it deserves a wide audience. Excellent!
I had the opportunity to view the film last night at the local foreign film cinema. It is a wonderful film, very moving. For anyone questioning the value of a good marriage steeped in traditional values, this film serves as a reminder of where many of us have come from and where many of us are tragically headed.

I have just finished reading the book. One thing I must say is that Jhumpa Lahiri is just an amazing writer. Her details in the story are so realistic so when I close my eyes, it feels like I am there as she is telling the story. I hope to watch the movie soon because I have a feeling it will be as good as the book.
Beautiful master piece. Mira Nair creates from a amazing book, one of the most universal stories, Love. Love between parents and sons, between two people, between two lands. It was a movie that made my spirit arise. Thank you.

Cultural, but universal. I'm a "white mutt" and also relate to and appreciate Lahiri's beautiful writing; it's certainly done justice in this film. It makes you appreciate your parents and those you love, in spite of what kind of family you may come from. I cried for the first time in ages while watching this . . . tears of passion!

Beautiful and a powerful film! I already want to see it again and will buy the DVD for sure! The sad thing is that movies like this don't play the mainstream multiplexes, especially in the medium and small sized towns. Look for it at your Landmark or other independent theater or wait for the DVD...and it will be well worth the wait, believe me. Pick up Ms. Nair's previous film "Monsoon Wedding" at the same time...another great film based on the East-West culture clash. Both are absolutely lovely and thought provoking films. I can't wait for the next film from Ms. Nair!
First I wanna ask Mira, as why on the earth was she even considering Abhishek Bachchan for "Gogol's" role. Given his acting talent(?), I really doubt he could have done half the perfect job what Kalpenn did.
Second, Movie was good. I am planning to read the book now, hope its as better as the film .
I love the movie and the book. Went to watch it in a very affluent neighborhood in the suburbs of New York where the audience was very civilized. They clapped when the movie was over and I even overheard one elderly woman said to another that the movie was powerful and compelling. I scanned the audience before and after the show and I was touched when I saw how closer couples held to each other when they came out of the show. Mira Nair has outdone herself this time. Kal Penn is offically a contender as a mainstream actor.

The Namesake is a great tribute to Bengali culture, art & literature. It has been so aesthatically made that it makes you feel proud of such a movie. No accolades are enough for the terrific performances of Irrfan Khan, Tabu & Kal Penn. None of them being bengali still they play their part superbly. It makes you laugh, cry, wonder and feel good.
It is also a fitting reminiscence of all the great bengali movies made by Satyajit Ray & Ritwik Ghatak
I could relate to the movie a lot being Half bengali myself & it has brought me more closer to my bengali roots

Jhumpa Lahiri is one of the most boring, sedate writers ever. She is awful. Her central characters are horrible too. They lead such watered-down inner lives and I almost feel sorry for them.
Reading 'The Namesuck' made me want to gouge my eyes out. In fact, it inspired me to imagine a caricature that some literary magazine must bring out: Jhumpa Lahiri, Arundhati Roy, and Kiran Desai with bald heads, attacking RK Laxman's 'Common Man' with tridents, while Naipaul looks down from the sky as Zeus.
There is so much talent in this country and I am appalled that rotten writers like 'Jumped-Up' Lahiri masquerade as masters of the craft (masters of the daft, more like).

loved the book! am sure will love the movie!! In the trailer, I was surprized to see the resemblance between Tabu and Jhumpa lahiri(the author of namesake). What a talented bunch of women....jhumpa, mira and tabu! Go Girls!!
Preeti- Charlotte, NC
terrible acting...one of the worst movie adaptations...movie tries to capture too much of the book plot... the screenplay does a terrible job of translating book narration into movie dialogue... several moments in the movie where other details are necessary to understand the plot...
even taking the movie on its own merit - it lacks depth and complexity of the plot and characters...there are moments one cringes when witnessing the acting of the mother, father, gogol and the sister...stereotypical experiences and stereotypical characters... the movie should have departed from the epic narrative of the book... and should've focused on fewer events while altering the book plot... there should've been more focus on the depth of gogol's problem of name and identity...instead we find an extremely superficial portrayal of his psychological struggles...
however.. one does get a vivid sense of life in india and life of indians in the US...

these videos have different themes that is why they dont work out!!
Mira Nair has beautifully brought out the essence of Lahiri's novel in her film.
I loved it. It has been a long long time since I cried so much in a film.
Deeply moving. Movingly touching. Touchingly emotional. And emotionally endearing.
Both book and film seem to speak directly to you. The story reveals something not just about the life of the characters, but about yourself as well.
ALL the actors were simply brilliant!
Congratulations on making such a fine film.

BRILLIANT movie, standout performances by Irfan Khan, Tabu & Kal Penn.Story is mesmerising & realistic.
I have read this book over and over. I can't even put into words what it means to me. The film is not playing in Columbus, Ohio. I'm so upset; when it comes out on video, you can bet I will buy it. I'm sure each reader has formed his or her own mental image of Gogol, his family, friends and others in his circle of life. I am eager to see how the artists in this movie compare to my pre-formed notion of the characters.
I have read Jhumpa's Namesake four times and now we are waiting for the release of Mira's movie in our city Richland WA.
Seema
I am glad the film has opened in Phoenix.
As a 1st Generation Bengali, this story is my story. Thank you.
All I got to say is that it is AMAZING. The book is obviously amazing, and furthermore, the film is JUST as great. It is not like any of the other films based off of novels where the movie changes or exaggerates or even leaves out events or imagery from the book and/or the book's underlying theme/plot. JUST AMAZING...oh and my favorite part of the movie is the imagery that Mira Nair places on Ashima when she tries on Ashook's shoes for the first time before meeting him! I just loved that scence because that is exactly how I pictured Lahiri words in the Namesake when she decribes Ashima in the begining of the book. And the cast was beyond perfect for this movie. EXACTLY how i pictured the characters to be, including Kal Penn. He did such a fabulous job playing a serious role, I am impressed!
Keep up the good work to both Nair and Lahiri!!!!
ps--this movie needs to play in more places than just the common big cities. i want my mother and father, out of all the people i know, to see this right away but i guess they wont be able to now that it doesnt play in our hometown. i guess we're just going to have to wait until it comes out on DVD...

Hi I live in Arizona and i'm always looking for good Foreign films. I know the movie is out in New York and California. Was wondering if it will be released in Arizona.... loved Monsoon Wedding and Waters. Great films
thanks,
Sandra
one of the most amazing movies i've ever seen. mira nair does an excellent job directing. it's a must see. the movie will touch your heart.
The first half of the movie is good, but the second half truly resembles a B-grade hollywood film. It's always a hit or miss with Mira Nair. Loved Monsoon Wedding, hated Kamasutra. The casting of all the white actors is mediocre. They truly seem like caricatures. The Indian cast is good, particularly Tabu and Irfan Khan -- both of whom did a marvellous job.
Rimjhim, New York
Just right on!!!
Just saw the film, definately very well made. Meera Nair has an art to capture emotions and an eye for subtle details. Saw it in Los Angeles, theatre was pretty full with american audience, everybody enjoyed the journey from calcutta to new york. Tabu and Irfan Khan suited the roles and did an amazing job. Kal penn was enduring as well. A must watch to taste a different culture.

I love the book. It is profoundly moving. I am going to see the movie soon!
March 23 will be a day to watchout for.Messsage Karan Johar & co.,stories are there you just need to make them.Reviews suggesting that good movies with good stories are accepted also.Mira Nair has done just that. She has made a great movie. Direction is excellent.Story is great.

Just finished reading the book The Namesake, I loved it! Was surprised to see the movie is out now = WOW! This is great! Jhumpa did a wonderful book of short stories and I hope to read more of her work soon too.
Mira is perfect to do the movie, of course. I'm sure she has done a superb piece of artwork for us all to enjoy. I loved her movie Monsoon Wedding.
Thank you ladies for sharing your talent with the world.

I wish I could just see this movie this moment as this book with all its emotions, the actors both Tabu and Irfan, and the subject so personal and heartfelt - that it could be the best thing I will see in a long time. Thanks to a great team.
Saumya Datta
As an a guy who has read both books, can't wait to take the MRS. to see this one. Glad it is not a poorly translated Hollywood production.
Eddi (My Namesake)
Wonderful to hear both Jhumpa and Mira talk about how universal this story is for us as immigrants to this country. I agree that it is for those who have come over since the 1970's and 80's.
For those of us whose parents came here earlier,i.e., in the 1950's, it meant several years of separation between our parents before being reunited after marriage, and years before families could visit relatives in India. Perhaps the subject of another book, and yet another movie!
I loved the book a lot, now waiting to see the canvas version of the book, how Jhumpa's descriptions and literary power came out through Mira's craft! hoping for one of the bests.
I have read the book -it is great and the movie trailer is amazing. The director has done such a good job with the colors/direction from what i can see in a 1 minute clip--cannot wait to watch the whole movie. I am sure it is going to be great. I think the cast is amazing. Just 5 more days to go.:).
Great job !!!!
I will be surprised if it does not win awards.
