ADAM director Max Mayer and actor Hugh Dancy talk about their shared experience of creating a character with Asperger's.
I will echo everyone's sentiments here in saying that (as someone with asperger's and who has managed to find love and a wife), this movie hits the nail on the head in terms of accurately portraying the disorder and the complications and difficulties of being in a relationship with someone with asperger's. Hats off to the filmmakers and Hugh Dancy for a marvelous and accurate oscar worthy performance.
My 15 year old son has Asperger Syndrome. This actor portrays very well, in fact, he is so much like my son! The lack of eye contact, the pedantic speech, the monologues, and the difficulty being accepted by others. I'm glad ya'll have made a movie about a person with Asperger's, and you got it so right. Maybe more people will understand this disorder, and be more accepting and welcoming of the gifts that people with Asperger's have to share. ...Sue
its not easier for those of uswho have to makeit in the nt world. i would almost guarantee your'e still living with mum and dad. those of us who make it have no choice, otherwise we'd be living on the streets.we don't have parents to coddle us and do everything for us.we have to give up everything to survive, people take horrible advantage of us,use us, abuse us,steal everything we have often, and for you to make the differentiation one that is that simple is asinine.we could just as easily say that we don't care about the ones who have been spoiled and not had to learn to pass.
While not all of us have it easy, it is a conscious decision to accept the humans for what they are and what they do. Anger and depression are common comorbitities with the disease. However, sufficive to say, it is easy to get angry at the wolf for eating ones sheep, while it is hard to accept the wolf's biology and to live with it in harmony.
I think adam is lucky if he has a job. I think he has a job. I don't have a job. In this movie adam has his own place. His asperger's can't be that bad. They should make a movie where the person has really big problems so people can know what it's like for us. (I don't care about you aspies who have a job, you function well enough to live in an nt world)
I am glad to see a movie about Asperger's Syndrome. It is a way to get the word out about the social disability since by default, aspies are not leaders. Could not create an awareness group like there is for other conditions and afflictions without the help of others. I to am an aspie. Though my case is mild while Adam's is severe, I have dealt with everything he has gone though. Like in the movie, interviewing for a job has been one of my greatest fears but I found people to help me with it.
I am a wife of a lovely man with aspergers and a son with autism it was lovely to see a film made so well on such a complex condition. Only having rainman and snowcake as film material it is good to see a romantic asperger young man. I laughed, cried and came away nowing that i fell in love with the character as it was like seeing my husband on film. I understand the job problem as we have lost count on how many my husband has had, and even though it does not cover those who struggle much more severely than adam it is good that people can see aspergers in a positive light with a few negatives thrown in.
