Or, as Soderbergh has pointed out, maybe good films are less about identifying with and 'liking' or 'caring' about the characters than they are about telling a powerful story. This is multi-dimensional, and certainly high impact. Personally, I recommend films to others based on the power of the story, and not wether I 'liked' it or not.

I watched this film and loved it. Growing up in NJ and seeing past superstar wrestlers at some of these type of events, it really made feel deep inside how sad it must be that these guys were on top of the world once, and did everything they could to freeze time as they grew older. Rourke deserves Best Actor for this film because he captured everything the story was and more. This is now on my all time favorite list !

Saw this yesterday and just had to watch many of the scenes again today. Mickey Rourke, oh man, Mickey Rourke. I'm still kinda baffled about his performance. He was, the movies is, just too beautiful. What ever the film lacks in a driving and thrilling and a forwardgoing story, it compensates with a beautiful, slow and most of all a very simple storyline and just wraps it all in a ball multiplies that exponentially with the characters, and their performances. Darren is a genious, Rourke made me cry (lol :D) and I'm in love with Marisa Tomei:)
I honestly think this is a movie that everyone should see. Even if you don't like it, you cannot but feel compassion and sympathy for the Ram AND genuine happinessa for Mickey.

Darren Aronofsky's film doesn't truly care about wrestling or wrestlers any more than Bresson's Au hasard Balthazar was about the plight of donkeys.

This performance by Mickey was not that...it was really his Life he was living on the screen for all to see...best movie I've seen in a very long time. It left me hanging there at the end, with my mouth open and in a very
deep, deep place in my mind, revisting the intense emotions I felt as a result of watching Mickey go thru the scenes...He very much had had to LIVE that kind of "one trick pony" Life to inject such emotion into every interaction with those who were important to him. I find myself anxiously
awaiting when I can see it again and further digest the emotionality he
exudes...I've always enjoyed his movies and this one will be talked about
and reflected upon for a very loong time. Geez, Louise he made me cry since
growing up in NYC I knew many one trick ponies...who didn't know another
way out...just like "The Ram". Mr Rourke I wish you continued success, for
you have paid your dues and deserve every little bit of it!!

The movie is perfect in every way. when i first heard about this movie i was wrestling in philadelphia, pa. Being a pro wrestler and seeing the film on the big screen has made me think sometimes about getting older and not being able to wow the crowd.but i do have to say the scene wear he goes to start working at the deli counter ( where the chanting of his name is so true). There are times when i can walk into a place before a show starts and get to the curtain to go check the ring and that and i hear the chants too. For me it was a great film showing the struggles of a pro wrestler and what they have to deal with in the real world. Just like he said people in the real world don't give a .... about you. But in the ring your on top of the world.

I saw this movie and loved it. It played out and ended so perfectly. Yes I liked the ending because I just sat frozen... Hand over mouth thinking. Thinking and thinking and just digesting the movie... I havent been so moved since the movie Boogie Nights. Truely amazing movie I absolutely loved every minute of it. the acting was incredible. It was more real than anything I had ever seen on screen. If you watched with an open mind you just felt it. I really really felt for 'The Ram'. Truely an epic picture.

I worked with a fading wrestling superstar on the loading docks of a KC newspaper back in the 80's. The "Nature Boy" would take off on the weekends from time to time to various matches around the country and I was always struck by the grizzled intelligence and quiet humility of this man and I could sense a deep sadness under the surface. One night, his arm got caught in the conveyor belt at work and what was left of his career was over.
I have not seen the movie but from what I have seen on this site and on television I can already tell that it is one that I need to see. I was amazed to watch what seemed like Mickey Rourke channeling my old co-worker and I know that Rourke has lived aspects of that life as well.
I really hope that this film brings Mr. Rourke the recognition and future projects that he so richly deserves.

You're an idiot - the ending sucked and was pretentious as hell. TELL a story - don't depend on the audience's "imagination" to do it for you. If I want to think I'll do a crossword puzzle.

have just watched this movie and in all honesty i cant say i am overly impressed. My faults dont lie with the performances but with the script, i really dont feel it was good enough for the creative talent they had on board. It was mostly predictable which dragged the scenes out. It also didnt finish any storyline it started, i know some of you will say "but that's the whole point, it makes you think and feel" but it does the opposite, i want to see a great story unfold on screen, not have to draw cliched conclusions for every new character or setting that is introduced.
p.s the ending sucked, come on, thats a film student ending, when you just don't know how to end the film.

With all due respect to your experience, you're likely disappointed because this movie did not do ALL the work for you and it puts one in the position of having to think - deeply.
Perhaps it struck a chord or nerve within you that simply rattled your cage more than you like to admit.
It's cool if you're "not overly impressed" but don't trash an effort simply because you cannot grasp it on a soulful level throughout.

Superb acting by Mickey & a terrific poetic ending, that's about it. Very weak as a drama, very uninteresting as a subject unless you lived in the 80s, it had no nerve, it didn't say anything other that there was a man who only cared about being cheered, predictable, touching at moments but it intentionally created some distance between the movie's hero and the movie's audience and ended up being another story of a vain man who pushed everyone away. I understand it deliberately wanted to be a bitter sweet movie, but the flavors were just too weak.

JUST SAW THE MOVIE. LOVED IT!!

I have seen "The Wrestler" a total of 4 times: 3 times on a small screen. The film opened in Austria very recently and I finally caught the film on the big screen and was even more deeply moved in a way that only great music or literature has ever moved me. I wept throughout. I don't remember any film of recent times which created such a visceral reaction.
Darren Aronofsky is a genius. I really admire how he created a "sandbox" to unleash Mickey Rourke's enormous talent/sensitivity/genius. This shows great humility and artistry. I am a professional Opera singer in Europe and was very impressed at the operatic scope of this film despite it being a "small film" and a very human story (La Boheme comes to mind). I now tell all my students to watch "The Wrestler" to be able to understand what it means to delve into one's deepest emotional resources in the service of art.
Mr. Aronofsky and Mr. Rourke....thank you for the inspiration.

The lens and the performance. You cant describe this movie any other way. Watching it was like living it. Not over the top, not dictating feeling, throwing itself on you. This movie allows you to feel it and let it be.
Life is so scripted, work, kids, payments etc. Wrestling is like life, there are things that happen to get a desired ending, but the actual experience of it is what your there for.
I hope that the public will give this movie a chance.

If you haven't seen "The Wrestler" I implore you to do so. I saw it the other night and thought it was mesmerizing. Rourke's completely honest performance along with Aronofsky's "Cinéma vérité" approach makes it seem as though you are watching a documentary about an actual person rather than an film with an actor playing a character. Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood are of course excellent in their supporting roles, however the movie is by and large Mickey. Or should I say, "The Ram." In the The Hollywood Reporter's "Actors Roundtable" conversations Mickey commented on how he had to really fight to get to use the hearing aid in the development of the character. He said in the end Aronofsky allowed him to use it. I felt that the battered looking, old school hearing aid was crucial to understanding the charter. You really feel bad for this guy when you see what a relic of a prosthetic with which the poor fellow is making do. The duck taped winter coat was another nice touch. This is an individual who is behind on the rent at the trailer park because he has to spend lots of dough on cheap steroids in order to keep his battered and beaten body going so he can wrestle to pay the rent. What he doesn't spend on trailer rent, chemical enhancements, gym memberships, tanning bed visits or low cost bleach jobs, he generously spreads around the rest of his meager earnings from the ring at the local strip joint. All of it in a sadly desperate attempt to hold on to the only thing he was ever good at, wrestling, as well as a little bit of the life style that went along with being on top in that profession. These kind of little details along with Rourke's incredibly believable performance and Aronofsky's minimalist film making are all part of what creates the perceived "reality" of the piece. This is about as close to reality as a film can possibly come. I really hope it sweeps the Oscars and Mickey gets a real shot at some other choice roles like Randy "The Ram" Robinson.

I have now seen "The Wrestler" three times. I am convinced that Rourke's performance in the film is one of the greatest in motion picture history. Certain scenes are so hauntingly real that...words can't even begin to describe the way they make you feel.

As Darren said at the end of this interview, "All you need is a lens and an honest performance..."
Mickey is brilliant and deeply affecting. Still wiping my eyes.

I have always love Mickey Rourke I think this man has been thru alot of soul searching and, hasn't had an easy road. I also think he is one of the finest actors I ever watch !!!When does something it comes out real; you forget he's acting. I wish him as always the best!! I hope he has found peace. I know he loves his dogs. I would love to hear he is going to do many more projects. Mickey was in our town for the one part of the movie. My husband had heard that. I also wish that he finds a good women to take care of him and, his dogs.....God bless you Mickey Rourke! Can't wait to see the movie.....Very emmotional seeing him win the other night ! Loved his speech. He's so him.........I think he's a survivor and, I hope he stays being good to himself.

From a perspective inside wrestling, this movie hits home. Thank you for taking this project so serious and giving the business the respect it deserves. Mickey did an outstanding job as did the workers appearing as support in the film. Very close, or as close as you can get in wrestling, to real life.

This was a deeply affecting film that haunts you long after leaving the cinema. It was a monumental performance from Mickey Rourke, who most definitely deserves the Best Actor Oscar this year. I couldn't imagine anyone else playing the role.
The realism and pathos of the film propel it to echelons of the greats!

I am totally blown away by this move DARREN thank you sooooooo very much for making this movie I have always had a soft spot for the pain that some of the old time wrestlers went and still go threw. This is one of the best films made in the last 10 years and I say that with all honestly. MICKEY has and will always be the man, it just goes to show that when you have talent it will always shine and that all you need is to believe in yourself and other will believe in you... thank you fox for taking a chance on what is a great piece of film work. This movie is one of the reasons why I love film.

An amazing story. I haven't even seen the film and it's my favorite of all time. Mickey Rourke has been an icon for me and for so many others. His performances in movies past show a talent as easy as milk pouring from a glass. I don't even know this man and I have a tremendous amount of respect and am strangely proud of him. He reminds me of me and so many people I know. The movie should have been named "Mickey Rourke." I wish him a happy ending, 'cause the middle must have sucked.

When I first saw an interview of this movie I didn't recognize Mickey at all...that is how long it's been since I saw Mickey in any serious movie. I still had the image of the younger Mickey back in the 80's and early 90's.
From just watching the various previews and interviews, you can sense that this is a very honest, touching and powerful movie.
I think everyone of us can related to the character at some level, either you know someone that is in similar situation, or you can see your life heading in that direction. As we get older, we all become more and more of a one trick pony. Very few people can escape that life's grip, and neither can the character in this movie.

An AMAZING FILM! I SAW IT TWICE AND WILL SEE IT AGAIN!
Anonymous | January 27th, 2009 03:14
As was said before, from the perspective of someone who worked in "The Business" for many years the movie is poignantly authentic. Thanks, DA, for the unflinching but sympathetic portrayal of the folk art, the morality play that is professional wrestling.

Rourke has set the bar and the Wrestler is a perfect film- no surprise if you have seen Darren Aronofsky's previous work. I'm pretty sure I didn't get married in the 90's because I thought one day I'd meet a Mickey Rourke. As Randy, he is completely naked in this film, so quiet, and gives more of himself to this character than an actor would think humanly possible. Randy's each attempt to connect, repair, or change direction is so clearly the last shot he has to take. Crazy what you go through in life, what you choose and how you end up. Mickey Rourke has proven that there are no wrong turns- if you are brave enough to create something so remarkable, so honest, and so beautiful with your scars.

Wow. Being a young girl in the '70s and watching All Star Wrestling on Saturdays at Noon, this movie puts perspective on a profession that has been sorely misunderstood. The audience wants the pleasure of a good fight and the wrestlers who make a living doing this kind of wrestling just want an audience and a way to make a living. The movie was so believable because of Mickey Rourke. His greek-tragedy-like-life in parallel to the Wrestler's story line, sucked every ounce of compassion I had for an aging man. Any man's life could be compared to the Wrestler and the realities of growing old. The profession of using one's body and looks to make a living reminds all of us that outward beauty is only temporary. There has to be more to life than just visual beauty. Mickey Rourke has proven that comebacks are possible and in this case, Rourke, is better than he has ever been. Great movie that everyone should see.

This movie really stands in a line with movies like Taxi Driver and others. A struggling soul being sincere and not artificial like so many hollywood movies. Great movie, best actor. He deserves the oscar. Let's pray he gets it !

It's Saturday Feb. 20th and I just saw this movie as well. I couldn't disagree with you more. I have seen all of the films up for best movie this year, and the Wrestler is right up there with all of them. Great acting, a script that is right to the point, great filming, editing, sound and music. Of course I hated the ending; I wanted the Ram and the stripper to ride off into the sunset. But, nonetheless, fantastic movie. Congratulations to all who particiated in making it.

I have to agree with your review. The Wrestler sucked - period. I have heard family and friends go on about the greatness of this movie. Actually the opposite is true...not great - just a movie about a washed up Wrestler. This movie doesn't have the same 'punch' as Rocky (the first movie) because you just don't care about the characters. Nothing in this movie makes you care about Randy or whether he foolishly decides to wrestle after his heart attack or not. At the end of the movie...his jumping off the ropes to certain death, could have been him jumping out of an airplane without a chute...I just didn't care. I wouldn't tell anyone not to watch this movie because you have to see this to believe it! This movie is a perfect example of how low the industry has to go to find an Oscar contender!
