THE WRESTLER director Darren Aronofsky talks to director Danny Boyle about working with Mickey and Marisa.
You don't understand wrestling, my friend. This movie isn't politicized in any way.
It's just that this entertainment sometimes uses historical facts (like the Gulf War, if you think of the rivalry between Hulk Hogan and Sergent Slaughter in the late 80s)in order to make the public feel more clearly and more strongly the matches, and the rivalry between the wrestlers.
Thus, this movie is not politicized. Maybe wrestling is politicized, but just to let the public identify himself with the fighters on the ring. It's not Aronofsky's fault.

It is wrong to think that there was any political agenda during this movie. Any wrestling fan will remember the 80s and to go so far as to remember the match ups and long standing rivalry between The Iron Sheik and Hulk Hogan. They may have used the political events of the time as a way to increase the theatrics of the matches, but in the end it comes down to the same sort of story arch; good guy beats bad guy. Just like old westerns; the guy in the white hat beats the guy in the black hat. It's just a way to discern the good from the bad.

The movie Wrestler is apparently about the life of a "wrestler", however in the end the movie is politicized as the main antagonist faces his challenger the Ayatollah (this part is played by a black actor in role of an Arab carrying the Persian Flag). Again given the religion and cultural heritage of Darren Aronofsky the director of the film it is not a surprise that this part was implemented. Perhaps the director needs a friendly reminder from all of us that it was Cyrus the Great with the Persian Flag that saved his people.

The film is not about world politics or history, therefore why bother to bring it up, and try and ruin was is a great character driven film.
Cyrus the Great was still a conqueror. And it's true that he saved his people, and even liberated others. He was a well respected King. But history is written by the winners, not the losers. You could even say that in this case, for at the time Cyrus would have been the good guy. But that's just the way history was written.

If you haven't seen "The Wrestler" I implore you to do so. I saw it the other night and thought it was mesmerizing. Rourke's completely honest performance along with Aronofsky's "Cinéma vérité" approach makes it seem as though you are watching a documentary about an actual person rather than an film with an actor playing a character. Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood are of course excellent in their supporting roles, however the movie is by and large Mickey. Or should I say, "The Ram." In the The Hollywood Reporter's "Actors Roundtable" sexy lingerie conversations Mickey commented on how he had to really fight to get to use the hearing aid in the development of the character. He said in the end Aronofsky allowed him to use it. I felt that sexy costumes the battered looking, old school hearing aid was crucial to understanding the charter. I have always love Mickey Rourke I think this man has been thru alot of soul searching and, hasn't bedroom furniture had an easy road. I also think he is one of the finest actors I ever watch !!!When does something it comes out real; you forget he's acting. I wish him as always the best!! I hope he has found peace
Currently, Aronofsky is working with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis on a project called "Black Swan" that Aronofsky had originally developed in 2007 for Universal. Aronofsky is also planning a Noah’s Ark Project which he started developing before Pi, and was co-written with Ari Handel.
