When I was 18 years old, I left home, working on a freighter, I traveled and spent time in the slums of the Philippines, Viet Nam, and India. The year was 1968. The experience of living among the truly poor made me really understand the fundamentals of life. One day, I was sitting, drinking tea, with a teenage prostitute, while she fed her baby. She taught me perhaps the most important lesson of my life. In casual conversation, She asked me if any one worried in the United States? At first, I thought the question was silly, and smiled and said of course Americans worry all the time. She then asked, But, If I were in the United States, and couldn't feed myself, someone would give me food? Right? I said, "Yes" and if I or my son got sick they would send me to the Hospital or give me medicine? or if I was poor, my son would still be able to go to school. And when I get old, and can't work, I would be taken care of? I couldn't answer her, I just cried thinking how spoiled we all are. This film, takes us all there. We are so blessed

This movie was up there in the best movies i've seen. Each story behind each question was so strong and significant. And the love story intertwined within the questions made the movie even better. I also liked the relation to the conflicts between Hindus and Muslims. Overall Slumdog Millionaire was a great movie and i recommend it to all.

Stayed at Manila , Philippines , for a few day's , before making my move to the provinces . I was in for a shock nonetheless . But the after shock was mild . Coz , i grew up with my poverty grandparents too as a kid growing up in Singapore . Both my grandparents hailed from : mainland china .
The simple things in life , is what city guy's should witness while staying in the provinces . We're so much more fortunate than the natives from the provinces . For me , it's a real eye opener to the world of reality . It's not a show , nor a documentary programs . It's real in fact . ;) ;)
Why i was there , coz , my sweetheart grews up in a poverty environment , despite she's been telling me that i was a gal from a poor family . Eventually , i still ended up visiting her & her family there in the Phils . Me , i was not a boy growing up with a silver spoon . I was in the middle , rather . Though not too rich & wealthy , at least , i've had a proper 3 meals each day , a proper shelter above my head & some spare cash for junk snacks .
But after visiting my sweetheart's family , her elder sister's asked me is everything fine & ok with me , there at their place , i said fine , not a problemo . Coz , i mizzed farm life , cows & goats alike , simple kind of life . I'm a foreigner visiting their place & home . Plus I'm a city boy staying in Singapore . That's why the strange reactions from them . But to me , i'm a province/village boy at heart . As long as i can be with my sweetheart , who cares man . To be with the gal whom you loved , nothing else matters whether she's a poor gal or a rich gal .
I hope more , local Singaporeans will get to watch : slumdog millionaires , the movie , & get to know how fortunate themselves are , as compared to those who lived in the slums like in India & the Philippines . Travel & take a walk , there , you'll be in for a shock & a real eye opener to the actual facts & events happening around you . Taste & sample the fun of simple living & soaked yourself in a poverty stage where the locals are living & feast on the rarest simple life which we no longer be able to taste it in developed urban countries . Country like : Singapore , has become an urban concrete wall place . Coz , we can't sample & taste farm life anymore here in Singapore . It's dead .

no. let us not blame everything to the government. the problem with Filipinos is that, they have become disastrously dependent with what the government can do for them. like for example, during elections there is a relatively high number of Filipinos who accept "suhol". it is a payment given to a person to vote for a certain candidate. if Filipinos consider themselves as responsible citizens, why accept such things in the first place? so we can't blame those government officials because for them it is as saying as "bayad na kayo", you are paid.

To all of you who asked, the song in the trailer, that starts at 56 seconds, it's called Hoppípolla, and is from an icelandic band called Sigur Ros. All of their songs give you goosebumps, i can assure. I have all their CD's and have gone to the concerts they already gave in my hometown, Lisbon.

Cannot wait to see it and feel embarrassed that in the year 2009 we have slums in India. Those poor people have not a breath of fresh air. Maybe I wont see it I would hate to enjoy watching someones misery ! What a ghastly country India, a constant state of Genocide. Pathetic. Lord McCauley surely carried out his vows to break the back of India in 1835, till this day the country is a ragged back broken ethos of misery. Congratulations to the makers of this film. My heart breaks for those slums ans other slums all over Asia and Africa. Anywhere the white man has been they have left behind slums and then come back to photograph it and make a movie of it.

Oh I LOVED this movie and I have been to India and I saw the slums they are there in calcutta in new delhi I saw dead bodies floating down the ganges river and beggars every where so this is a very very accurate portrayal of India today in 2009 - I am going to tell everyone I know to See it because I LOVE BOLLYWOOD and I love the love story. would that we all would be loved that way one day!
Another interesting point was how he had to ask for help on a basic question, but if you are not educated, you would not know something basic about your own country.
I loved this movie, we took our 12 year old son and he was moved also. I liked that they showed them re-filling water bottles and closing them with super glue. Vacationers beware.

This is one of my fave movies of all time. what made the movie truly amazing aside from the superb casting from the acting prowess of young Salem, Jamal and Latika to the perfect portrayal of the true picture of the society not only in India, is the awesome soundtrack that made the movie truly unforgettable. everybody is talking bout the Movie here in the PHILIPPINES. i worked as a call center agent in one of hotel chains in the world. and what made this special? we received callers every week from employee who's last name is Patel. They own lots of franchise hotels in US. What an irony seeing the lead star, Dev Patel, working in a call center industry. This movie is truly an eye-opener!!!!
