Director Kevin Macdonald explains the story behind title of the film and why Idi Amin loved Scotland so much.
forest whitaker has made some crappy movies also... who can forget the garbage movie Black Dog
yeah. it 's a wonderful movie. i watched it 3 days ago. first, idi amin was a great man but after he was fucking man. But Forest was really perfect. He took a oscar with his performance at this movie. Realy idi amin was so ugly. But forest is sympathetic.
well yes the Move is nicely made. the guy who acts the white doctor is fabulous. about forest, words are very limited. However, the movie shouldn't distort facts, especially since it's about real events.

Yet another brilliant performace by Forrest(no, not Gump) he won the oscar I think...right? He paly good bad guys everytime!
Great work Forrest (not not Gump) on yet another brilliant performance, well past due for that Oscar! He own, he won!!! Yeahhhhhh
I thought the title had something to do with the fact Forrest's character called the doctor "scotland" and then tries to kill him in the end. Not some fasination w/scotland. I guess that's why it's art, open to interpretation. Was I that far off?
Well although I really enjoyed the movie I think the movie should not have said based on real events when actually it wasn't the movie bascially was telling the story of the white doctor life and because there was no white doctor how could there even by a movie about him. Why did you show the doctor having an affair with idi wife Kay when that was not true.
You also made it seem like she went to the village people and had an abortion when really the doctor she was having an affair with did the abortion and messed up. Kay Amin was a very intellegent women who went to a university and she would have know better then to sleep with a white doctor and get preganat by him . She actually slept with a black doctor who killed hisself after the abortion went wrong.
Please before you do a movie about someone who alrady have a negative light on him atleast get your story right. If you just wanted to make money than do a movie on something else.
Although I really like this movie and the actor and actress who played in it I think that Kerry Washington should have did a little investingating on Kay Amin and she would have know that it did not happen that way. If you was not there how can you tell a story about real events you can't go by what you hear I am pretty sure most of you played the telephone game when you were a child and if not ask someone about it you never hear what the first person really said once it get to you.
I am upset because this would have been a better movie if everything was fact like we were made to believe. Please get your fact right and this is also go out to the Hotel Rawanda movie which also was not 100 % fact.
It doesn't say the movie consists entirely of actual events, it just says based on actual events, and no your right, that doesnt mean it was 100% facts, cause then it would have been boring...
This email sounds like the writer is a staunch Amin supporter??...Amin was evil and I am sure they got most of the story from the real Scottish doctor and didnt just make all of it up, Amin was a madman and evil and to hear anyone support him is scarey.
Good film but it does does not separate fact from fiction. Bob Astles was Amin's white advisor and not a doctor. Kay did have an affair but with a black doctor and he later committed suicide after a botched abortion. Film's should be either fact or fiction. Blurring these distorts history and dumbs us all down. Perhaps these truths and fictions could be mentioned either at the beginning or the end of the film.
don't think it needs repeating what a fine job forrest whitaker did in this film, but there are other kudos to consider: 1. the cinematography, for one, was excellent! itz so refreshing to see a film shot on location these daze, and gee! doesn't it add flavor and authenticity?! the use of natural light, even the sunsets, proved evocative; hope this sends a message to other filmakers how much going the extra mile when it comes to location really counts! 2. so glad the soundtrack was not overbearing! gawd, i wish directors would take note on how much excessive soundtracks can take away from a film's content. a recent example would be NOTES ON A SCANDAL, starring cate blanchette and judy dench, where strong english accents combined with an excessively loud and emeshing soundtrack made hearing and understanding dialouge next to impossible! don't they think we can follow a screenplay well enuff to experience suspense without being hit over the head by a deafening angst-driven orchestra? going back almost a decade, ANY GIVEN SUNDAY - in my mind an extremely underrated movie directed by oliver stone - could have benefitted as well from a toned-down soundtrack during important moments in the dialouge. on the field, the soundtrack was well-chosen and served to enhance the action, while at other times it was over-blown and unnecessary, making dialouge extremely hard to hear. well, didn't mean to go off on a tangent here, especially since THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND suffered from none of those problems. one last comment concerning actress kerry washington: beautiful and talented, and where the heck have i been not to have noticed her before?
It's nice to know that some people of Scotland learn their history from the back of a crisp packet.
"in 1745 under rhe command of Prince Charles Edward Stuart the scots rebelled but were defeated at Culloden. Their defeat was followed by the breaking of the clan system and the highland clearances. Many scots emigrated to America where they or their descendants helped win the revolution in 1776."
Firstly, the main reason many Scots never wanted the Union with England in 1707 was because they feared the Anglican church would not only subsume the church of Scotland, but that the Anglican Church was too close to Roman Catholicism. The politican union, however unsavoury to the Presbyterian majority was actively sought by most of Scotland's political elite.
Secondly the Scots never rebelled in 1745. The Jacobites - or those loyal to the Stuarts- rebelled. The Jacobites were defeated by government troops, most of which were from Scottish regiments from the lowlands - though there were some regiments made up of Gaels. There were street parties in Glasgow when they heard the news of Bonnie Prince Charlie's defeat. The Presbyterian majority in Scotland hated Charles Edward Stuart. Most Scots in 1745 regarded him the way we regard Osama bin Laden today - an evil terrorist who had murdered many of their fellow countrymen. (The Stuarts, as kings of england and Scotland, had mercilessly persecuted the Presybeterians and the Covenanters in the 17th century).
Most of the Scots who fought in the American Revolution did so on the side of the British and having picked the losing side, most had to escape to Canada in case of revenge by their "fellow Americans" - this is one reason why there are so many people of Scottish descent in Canada. The Scots were generally hated at this period in American history - although it has to be said that there were many American revolutionary heroes among the Scotch Irish (Presbyterian Scots who emigrated from Scotland to Ireland and later America). The Scotch Irish and Scots descedants were associated with the Ku Klux Klan (the flaming cross was a famous Scottish symbol), hill billies and rednecks.
Oh and by the way, the Highland clearances were done by Scottish clan chiefs to their serf - in other words, the leaders of the Gaels who had made the Gaels go to war with Bonnie Prince Charlie then kicked their descendants off the land because it was more profitable to farm sheep. So if the clan system was broken up, it was done by the clan leaders in search of a quick profit.
One final thing, Highland dress was regarded by lowland scots as the uniform of beggars and thieves - at least until Sir Walter Scott decided to turn the tartan clad highlanders into a cute wee pictures to go on shortbread tins.
The Last King Of Scotland
This is a great movie love it. And if the Queen is watching this. I would just like to say get ur silly ass to Downing Street. And fight for Scotland's Inpedence becuase you don't care about us. Scotland will rebel 1 day. Do IT KNOW. Or one day when i grow up im going to be Priminister of Scotland and do it myself. MUhahahahahah
Obviously the "Engliafied" directors of Braveheart AKA Mel Gibson forgot to mention the fact that the Princess of Wales character was in fact only a baby when William Wallace was executed in London, by a nation that was just toooooooooo afraid of the Scots in general, so hows that for perverseness. Mmmmm?? Also Robert the Bruce and William Wallace never met in person.
Directors have a licence to get All historical facts WRONG!!!
Of course Idi Amin (and of course every other person in the world) needn't look any further than such a great country as Bonny Scotland. But of course this was only made easy by being able to watch TV (invented by a Scot), or if he wanted drive along his new tarmac roads (Tarmacadam invented by a Scot), in his car on tyres (Tyres invented by a Scot) to fly by plane and land in fog with Radar (Radar invented by a Scot) or to go to one of his new hospitals to get an injection of Penicillin (discovered by a Scot), or ride his bicycle (invented by a Scot), wear his rubber running shoes (invented by a Scot and NOT NIKE), Need I go on??? The list is endless. Where would we be if not for Scotland? I think this speaks for itself SCOTLAND IS THE GREATEST SMALL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.
"I guess the first 2 posters never saw Braveheart. King Edward 1 of England, popularly known as the "Hammer of the Scots", achieved fame as the monarch who conquered Wales and who kept Scotland under English domination during his lifetime. The Kingdom of Scotland remained a subjugated state of England until the formation of the Kingdom of Great Britain (England, Wales, and Scotland united) in 1707. I would agree with the idea that Scotland was an imperialist dominion of England prior to their unification."
Scotland was never conquered but it was bought with english gold. The act of union in 1707 was followed by the dissolution of the scottish parliament; in 1745 under rhe command of Prince Charles Edward Stuart the scots rebelled but were defeated at Culloden. Their defeat was followed by the breaking of the clan system and the highland clearances. Many scots emigrated to America where they or their descendants helped win the revolution in 1776.
Robert Burns best describes the act of union in his poem.
Farewell to all our Scottish fame,
Farewell our ancient glory!
Farewell even to the Scottish name.
So famed in martial story!
Now Sark runs over Salway sands,
And Tweed runs to the ocean,
To mark where England's province stands -
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
What force or guile could not subdue
Through many warlike ages
Is wrought now by a coward few
For hireling traitor's wages.
The English steel we could disdain,
Secure in valour's station;
But English gold has been our bane -
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
O, would, or I had seen the day
That Treason thus could sell us,
My old grey head had lain in clay (be buried)
With Bruce and loyal Wallace!
But pith and power, till my last hour
I will make this declaration
'We are bought and sold for English gold'
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
These Pretzels are making me Thirsty!
This film details how the Last King of Scotland, played by Whitaker, has to suffer the likes of slacker stoner Spicolli (Sean Penn) and a fast good manager that thinks he's a judge in order to become a star high school athlete and maintain his camaro. A tour de force performance by Whitaker!
BTW, the movie is called The Last King of Scotland because Whitaker insisted on wearing a skirt in the film, commando style.
I saw this incredible movie and commented how I left the theater very disappointed not knowing the whereabouts of Dr. Nicholas Garrigan. I decided to google his name and to my amazement found out he is fictional. What? Not Real? No way! He's actually based on conversations with someone else. Actually I'm pretty pissed off because when in the beginning of the movie they say "Inspired by real events" there is no reason why we the moviegoers wouldn't think this was a real person. You emotionally invest into a character and then find out he's not real but created and based upon conversations with someone else. I don't think so! There is a way you could pacify avid movie goers with some kind of an additional disclaimer. Yes...I'm still pissed off. Anyway....Forrest get your speech ready - you're going for the Gold on February 25! Let me be the first one to Congratulate you on your win!

Just saw the movie - what a movie! Without a doubt - Forrest Whitaker deserves the Best Actor Award - so - no one else should even bother to show up. His performance - is a once in a lifetime. His extraordinary acting career has been leading up to this one moving performance. Incredible! My only comment is I left the theater not knowing what ever happend to Dr. Nicholas Garrigan. It didn't seem finalized to me. I need to know what happened to him. You should have put 1 or 2 sentences up explaining "Whatever happened to". If you know let me know. LShay6@aol.com
YES THIS MAN CAN TRULY ACT AND IF U HAVE NEVER SEEN SOME OF HIS WORK, HOW ABOUT THE SECURITY GUARD IN LIGHT IT UP WITH USHER FEW YEARS AGO , OR HOW ABOUT HIS TV ROLE AS THE LT. FROMM FROM IA IN THE SHEILD, HEY THEIR R MANY MANY MORE I COULD NAME BUT JUST FORGOT THEM FOR RIGHT NOW, BUT THOSE WERE TWO OF MY FAVORITES, IT SHOULD BE AND OSCAR FOR HIM,

I've just seen it. The most authentic movie of human characters ever made. Superb acting. N.S.W. Australia.
forrest, you did a great job. as a kid during the 70's i was drawn to idi amin on every news and magazine story i read of him. and look now, you've brought the nightmare back to life 100% . you did the best job any actor has ever done.
This movie looks to be extremely powerful and scary at the same time... so much so that I will go see it as soon as it is released in Australia. What a tragic time in history. To get Forrest Whitaker to play this role is a stroke of genius. Whether he plays a cameo, support or main role he has a screen presence that captivates.
I'm going to see this movie based on the wonderful raves. Another great Whitaker performance -- Ghost Dog.
Forrest is an african-american actor like no other. Everybody imitates denzel, will smith, samuel jackson, eddie murphy and others, but not Forrest. Hes got his own style of acting that is real and serious even when he is acting a happy scene.
am i right in that forest was in the 'green mile?' im sure it was him his role & the way it was played made me cry!

Whitaker as the brutal Amin has the film viewers eating out of his hand and has the Oscar ready for his scary clutches.
Forest, what a powerful perfomance..there were moments in the cinema when i actually thought i was watching the real Idi Amin.An Oscar shud be given to this man.
Congrats to Forrest for his Globe. Long overdue and well-deserved. Keep up the great work, you're a wonderful artist!!!

Forest Whitaker was fantastic but the surprise was how convincing James McAvoy played the doctor. Couple this movie with Hotel Rwanda and I wish my history of Africa was more in depth. It may be time to study Henry Louis Gates, Jr.'s Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience.
Forrest Whitaker has been "the best actor nobody knows about" for two decades. Hopefully this movie will change that!
Idi Amin (and of course every other person in the world) needn't look any further than such a great country as Bonny Scotland.
