i fell in love with the movie, nice set of songs and lines... i really love this one.. specially dominic cooper role...
the movie sucked I rented the DVD from the Library near my apartment all they did was sit in their desks and read and write essays.

The film is lifted straight from the stage play without too much adaptation to the screen, so some of the scenes have an unreal, "stagey" quality. To add to that unreality, at the time the story is set, the gay boy would have had it kicked out of him in the playground. Being queer was even less tolerated then than it is now, so the mincing doesn't "read" right. There's a discord between the nostalgic 60's feel and the open gay-ness that jars throughout.
The film was, I thought, only OK. It's perhaps better viewed as a film for TV (I felt it wasn't worth paying cinema prices to go and see)
i have just seen the history boys at the cinema and hope to try and catch the stage version at some point, I thought that the sadness of the film was overwhelming, particularly towards the end (obviously), though the sharp humour exercised throughout allowed the plot to work more freely and in a very realistic manner. The teacher-pupil relationships I found very carefully portrayed and also very sympathetic to the plights of not only the pupils but also their teachers and the background of what is expected of them, with only the reliance on the skills of their pupils to highlight their own intellectual prowess. In conclusion of this I would give the film a sterling 9/10 with only one mark deducted for the lack of focus on some of the other interesting boys -I felt that this film was largely centered on only three of them, and that this was a mistake, however due to time restrictions for a feature film this was dealt with in an admirable way. looking forward to seeing the parallels (or not) between this adaptation and the stage version.

I imported (to Brisbane, Australia) the UK DVD of History Boys, knowing that any Alan Bennett film on this topic must be good - but I am extremely impressed. The humour was just as effective on the third viewing - and the dialogue is so precise and inventively delivered that you need three viewings to feel you've taken it all in. The direction is as good as the acting and all these actors are the best (they deserve an ensemble cast Golden Globe). We see the cinematic release here in May 2007 and I will be there with bells on for the big screen experience. History Boys is a richly rewarding, highly entertaining, cultural adventure.
Why hasn't the "faggy boys" comment been deleted from this page? Is no one monitoring this page? Surely that hateful little comment has no place here and should be removed. If it was the "N" word he used I would hope it would also be removed post haste.
why isnt the movie getting more attention from the media? i mean they give attnetion to cheesy fils like high school musical but they dont give any media attention to a great film/play like The history boys?

and to "faggy boys": seriously, shut up. you probably (obviously) don't understand the intellect of this movie. You probably haven't seen it and if you did, you clearly did not understand it. it's not "faggy" or "gay" (note: gay should not even be used as an insult, there is nothing wrong with being gay), it's about education (clearly something YOU, "faggy boy" think is "gay" because you have yet to come across a good education in your life time) yes, but education should be prized and not thought of as bad, you clearly see in this movie that it is though of as good, which it should be in actual life. Seriously, go jack off to ur mirror.
PS. I'm american and you guys should come back and do another play. I missed all of yours, i only saw the movie! it was great but probably not as good as the play.

With regards to the "faggy boys" comment, why is it that homophobes are *so* obsessed with anything intellectual being bent (queer)? Anti-intellectuals (or "TT" trailer trash) as many refer to them, certainly have some odd issues with their own sexual identity and lack of mental capacity. For those who can't wait for the film to hit the more rural areas, purchase the play on CD. Ironically, you are denied the ability to DL it from audible.com if you live in the U.S. The best place to go is amazon.com.uk, and pick it up used. The shipping will be about the same as the 2-1/2 hour play (3-CDs), so plan to spend $16 or so. The play for sale in hardcover or paperback lacks stage directions, so it can be confusing. This work is a joy. How wonderful it is to divert our minds for a few hours from the global situation.
