An incredibly beautiful film. It just takes you away to place we all want to go. Let's have more movies like this one.

This movie kicks so much ass, that my ass will never be the same.
Anonymous | July 8th, 2007 15:47
Brilliant, real, amazing, unadorned, simple, beautiful, soulful...
Why are movies like this so rare? SEE IT... it will feed you.

Does anyone know if the scene in which Marketa walks from the store while singing "If you want me" is posted somewhere?
Anonymous | June 15th, 2007 22:54
there is no other movie quite like this. it is simply in a class of its own. one of my new favorite movies.
Anonymous | June 21st, 2007 19:55
This is the movie you always hope to see when you enter a theatre. It proves the major studios have forgotten how to make real movies for real people, and have lost the magic captured in this film. I left the theatre wanting to see the characters again. I also have told everyone to go see it and buy the soundtrack CD. This is now one of my all time favorite films.

This is one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time. Simple, yet very touching. The music with this is perfectly placed and definitely goes with the different parts of the story line. If you're a musician of any level, this is a must see movie. It will be inspiring.
Anonymous | June 22nd, 2007 18:58
I too loved this movie, the characters grow on you-and the music moves you!
The simplicity of words, the importance of how life moves so quickly-makes you respect people who live....to the fullest.

Fucking brilliant. I want to see the sequel.

The person that used profanity to describe the movie, must not have much of a vocabulary. Fantastic, would have worked. Kids do occasionally get on web pages that they aren't suppose to be on. Keep it clean, Please!
Anonymous | July 24th, 2007 12:44
Ah, my friend, you have encountered a cultural difference. In the Irish usage, it is not profane. It means REALLY. Watch the movie and it will become clear that the use of the word is entirely without malice.

This is making me cry. I crying hard.
Anonymous | July 24th, 2007 13:39
I feel that the music combined with acting/film perfectly expresses the arrays of emotion the characters display. Music has such a huge impact on how humans perceive situations and experience different emotions. Because music is practically the third primary character in this film, the emotions are so much richer.

I actually wept.
8/18/07 23:00 EST. I've just seen this flick at the Tara Arts in Atlanta. It's a hit. I knew I would add this and the sound track to my collection not half way into it. I hate the term "instant classic", but I'll be damned if this ain't it. If you think I'm gushing, go see it.
Good work, when does the band tour?

I have been waiting to see this movie. I just bought Swell Season and it is an amazing record. I listen to it everyday. Life should be pleasantly simple.
Anonymous | July 29th, 2007 22:18
Gawrgeous, as the Irish say... a truly beautiful film with wonderful music and fine performances... I want to see the sequel too. I can't even decide which song should be nominated for the Oscar - any will do. Ahh, what a film. Run, dont walk. I can't remember the last film that affected me as much.

On a dollar for dollar production cost comparison, there is no other movie that even comes close to this 'bound to be a classic'. Even if it had cost $10 million to make, it is still way ahead. Tone in NZ

The moment the movie ended I was still in a ONCE daze. My sister and I went immediately to the 'record' store and bought the soundtrack. Everytime I hear SAY IT TO ME NOW I cry and sigh to catch my breath. I love how this movie celebrates the passion and raw, soul baring emotion of their music. This is honest music with no smoke and mirrors. Bravo and thanks to all who made this movie.

I play guitar and sing myself and always believed in performing your song with the emotions intended in the lyrics. This, i think, is very difficult and both artists in this movie execute it very well. It almost made me cry. GREAT MOVIE!

What word is he asking her to translate into Czeck, when they stand on the shore? It sounds like 'dear love'. I think she answers "I love you', not sure, though, I can only guess (I'm Polish). Any Czecks out there? Beautiful film and music, but so painful to watch, subconsciously waiting for this typical Hollywood ending that I usually don't like. I guess that's life, "you can't get always what you want". Their lives won't be the same anyway, their encounter is a little treasure they can take with them for the rest of their lives.

This song moved me so much, then every song that followed filled me with so much emotion it made me numb.
The most moving picture i have ever seen.
Thank You

I'm sure we have all loved and lost.

who gives her the piano? him or her husband?
Anonymous | September 29th, 2007 15:29
Well, i think he asked what's "do you love me?" in Czech.
Anonymous | October 1st, 2007 11:31
who gives her the piano? him or her husband??
Have you no romance in your heart? Seriously, of course Glen gives Marketa the piano. He uses the money that his ol' Da gave him for London. You see him going into the piano shop near the end.
This is probably THE perfect indie. Fox, do EVERYTHING you can to push this onto the Oscar radar. America (and the world) needs this sort of imaginative, hopeful, expressive, genuine love story . . . and so much more real for being a story of unrequited love (so UN-Hollywood, so UN-Julia Roberts!!)
Anonymous | October 4th, 2007 12:55
I saw this movie on a Monday night, late ... just me and about 4 others in the Theatre. Normally when a movie ends, the credits roll and everyone just gets up and leaves....not this movie..the few of us that were in the theatre that night didn't budge from our seats until the lights came on. Over the next 5 days I saw the movie 2 more times. I took my wife one day and my 10 year old son another day...and both times it was the same...no one moved until the house lights were on. An incredible film. I have never been so moved in my live by a film. It was only showing in my city for a couple weeks. I certainly hope Once makes it to DVD and soon.
As far as the seen where "the guy" asks "the girl" what the Czech is for " do you love him?" her answer is translated to "It is you that I love"

Congrats on 2Morrow win in Moscow. Well done you guys.

It's not a fim about unrequited love though, to the person who said that... that would have been a much more self-indulgent and far less interesting film than this. Thye both have an intense connection to the other; she tells him in czech "it is you that I love" when they're by the sea, but she's married, with a kid, and he's still screwed up about his ex. That's why it's so bittersweet - it would have been perfect at another time in their lives, but that's just not what happens sometimes. Superb film. I wouldn't have gone to see it if it had Cillian Murphy in, I think him dropping out was actually a bonus in retrospect.

Yes, she answered "Ilove you", when he asked her, if she loves her husband.
Anonymous | January 17th, 2008 11:47
Simple great movie,
Simple, touching, inspiring AND GREAT MUSIC ..
BTW: In the scene by the shore
He asked: How do you say "Do you love him ?" She says "Milujes ho ?"
He asked: "Milujes ho ?" and she replied "Miluji tebe" = I love you ..
- i thought i might help out, if anyone wondered what is it that she said ...
(i think it was actually nice, that they made people wonder, not knowing what was the translation ...)

They deserve it!

Amazing film, I like it very much. If I understand well, you don't know, what he wants translate in czech...she answerd him in czech:"do you love him?", and he put this answer her (about her husband). She said "no... I love you", but in Czech, so he didn't understand it. I hope, that I wrote it well, becouse my English isn't too good. But I understand Czech:-)
