Why is it when you see an Indian woman or girl in a store or in public period they look deformed? I mean I have never seen. other than in Bollywood any Indian woman or young girl that is not bucked teeth, brown teeth at that and looks like she's been hit with an ugly stick. But you see them in movies and they are beautiful. How the heck does that work???? Penn, is great he is not a great Indian Comedy Actor. He is a great funny comedy actor period. To me most of the men if not all in those Bollywood videos look like sissies. They shake their butts Travolta style in all of their fast video. Oh and nother question, why do all the women singers sound alike?? I mean really, they sound just alike, especially when they a high annoying note. Well, I hope this didn't offend anyone.

FYI that was offensive and you are an ass. I sure hope it was a joke otherwise I'll chalk it up to ignorance being complete bliss you jerk.
Anonymous | March 16th, 2007 17:01
Funny to see that somebody would be so dumb or ignorant (before interviewing a star of the movie based on a novel) and say it nam-a-sake...pretty dumb. But Kal, I have seen the trailer and I have read the book by Jhumpa Lahiri from page to page so many times- and it still brings in me the same overwhelming feeling everytime I read it and I believe from what I saw in the trailer- the movie will do justice to the story-- which is so close to all of us who are born and raised away from our parents(our) homeland. This is not a fiction but a true story to immigrants like us.
Anonymous | March 17th, 2007 10:14

Hope to see this soon. I heard the word Name sake and shivered. When I was growing up in the American South, you heard this word often. The person who you were named after or the person who was named after you.Namesake referred to some one who was either alive or deceased. The person for whom you were named,if living became a mentor, a godparent or if deceased became an example you carried in your heart. It was a beautiful idea. One of my names was an aunt who died tragically at age 16. As I reached 16 I was afraid I would die also. at my current age of 60, I realize that Namesake does not mean that we have the same fate. If you use the namesake name you can discover different family lines. It is nice to hear the familiar word name sake. Ruby Elizabeth

The book was great - I can't wait to see how the movie fares.
Anonymous | April 2nd, 2007 02:07
To Why it is when you see an...
You are a bloody bigot and an ugly one to boot, I am sure. Why don't you take a flight from La La land to India and take a look around you? The ones you see wherever you are may be mixed with whatever race you are and that is why they are deformed.
Anonymous | April 2nd, 2007 02:41
Why is it when you see an
You need to be hit with a stick, any stick, you arsehole.
Anonymous | April 4th, 2007 20:28
I saw the movie today and have read both of Jhumpa Lahiri's books, so I had high expectations. I am also a doctoral student in NYC so it was nice to get a sense of the city I am in as well in the movie, though that was unexpected given the books' location in Mass. I wanted to applaud the actors and actresses for bringing to life the dynamic characters. I don't think they could have cast better people, and you are all worthy of praise. It is also nice to finally see a story about Indian Americans and the acculturation stress that accompanies immigrants and children of immigrants. It was beautiful seeing my own, my relatives', and friends' experiences validated and visible in mainstream culture for the first time. I went to see the movie in Times Square and there were hardly any seats in the packed theater! I was proud. Keep up the good work! Namaste.

irfan khan and tabu--both have not been the right choices--they couldnt speak proper bengali or english.educated NRI bengalis dont have that awful english accent!mira nair should have looked at the talent available in kolkata--like rituparna or konkana.sabyasachi would ve been more suitable as "ashoke ganguly" rather than irfan khan who didnt know proper bengali.
Anonymous | April 9th, 2007 06:00
very disappointing! the story is great but the cast has been disappointing.
mira nair could have taken suggestions from contemporary bengali film director Rituporno Ghosh about the selection of the characters.Tabu & Irfan Khan are both good actors but they were not suitable for these roles as their bengali was very poor and they couldnt represent the bengali sensitivities.or it could even have been dubbed.

Ya,i found the accent thing weird too..but its justified for Ashima, since she mostly interacts with Bengali housewives. But since Ashoke did his PhD in "Amra" he probably should have had the American accent while speaking in English.
I think the movie was absolutely brilliant. The book is good too, totally worth the two subsequent days of waterworks...but the music streamed into the scenes of the movie made it a better experience than reading the book. The movie is much faster and thank God for the pace.I think this is the only book-to-film adaptation that i have truly enjoyed.
Hail Mira Nair!! And flying kisses to Kal Penn!!
Anonymous | November 21st, 2007 06:27
And also,Kal Penn is the cutest, hottest chimp resembling guy ever!

i think that Jake Gyllenhaal should be in the more movies, that is similar to Korean style. I think that Korean style of clothing is much better, and much prettier!!!! ok? And I think that you are copying korean style of clothing, so I think that you should be more appropriate, ok? Got cha?
And, PLEASE, don't ever laugh at Korean peoples ok? I think you are the RACIST!! And I want you to respect all the Korean peoples, not because we are koreans, because we are all colors, no matter what. Ok?
And I deserve to a noble prize winner, then you, JAke! And you want to know about my background? Well, then you gotta LEARN, YOU BIG BIG BIG MAN!
OK? I SAW you in the Ellen show, with big nose, and big head, and your whithy whithy face! AND PLEASE, DO some readings, about culture differences ok?
GOTA CHA? OK, then, good-bye, FAREWELL, I'M HEADING TO Boston! TO Harvard!

Kal Penn is so hot!!!
Anonymous | November 8th, 2008 05:13
It's a wonderful movie and will appeal to those interested in a juxtaposition between Calcutta and New York life. I laughed, I cried, I stayed awake. Basically, I fell in love with this movie, its cast, its setting, and its plot.

I recently rented this jewel at my local Blockbuster and will purchase it for my collection. It was exquisite! I can't speak to the authenticity of the Bangali accent, as I have no personal experience with that, but it seems to me to be a minor detail, if it isn't authentic and the story is so much larger than that detail. I have a real love for any people that accept a challenge as big as leaving their homeland for opportunity and/or love. Such examples are nothing short of inspirational to me in fact. Witnessing the character of all of the characters in this movie was very refreshing to me. And knowing there are people everywhere that are living out this scenario fills my hope tank. And, by the way, I saw one of the most beautiful creatures I've ever seen anywhere (tv, movies, magazines included) the other day, here in my hometown and she hails from India.
BRAVO!
