I have seen "The Wrestler" a total of 4 times: 3 times on a small screen. The film opened in Austria very recently and I finally caught the film on the big screen and was even more deeply moved in a way that only great music or literature has ever moved me. I wept throughout. I don't remember any film of recent times which created such a visceral reaction.
Darren Aronofsky is a genius. I really admire how he created a "sandbox" to unleash Mickey Rourke's enormous talent/sensitivity/genius. This shows great humility and artistry. I am a professional Opera singer in Europe and was very impressed at the operatic scope of this film despite it being a "small film" and a very human story (La Boheme comes to mind). I now tell all my students to watch "The Wrestler" to be able to understand what it means to delve into one's deepest emotional resources in the service of art.
Mr. Aronofsky and Mr. Rourke....thank you for the inspiration.
