Stars still in slums!
The two child stars of this movie, which earned at least $ 326 million dollars, still live in slums.
Actually, the slum little Azharuddin lived in was bulldozed and now he and his family are homeless according to a recent newspaper report (May 14, 2009). Little Rubina's slum was flodded with sewage water last month according to the article.
I did not see the film, but it is unconscionable to me that these children were exploited by hollywood and returned to a slum. The film won best movie of the year and 8 Oscars in total. It says a great deal about the culture of hollywood, director Danny Boyle, producer Christian Colson, and 20th Century Fox. How can they possibly reap such monetary gain without a thought to the slums that they portrayed in their movie? to the very children featured in their movie?
I hope there will now be a negative spotlight on the producers of this film which will pressure them into doing what is right. Otherwise, perhaps the movie would be better titled "Hollywood Millionaires...exploiting India."
