It's a misrepresentation to think that Hindus are a majority. There is no homogeneous unified Hindu people.
Each caste in India is its own minority. India is made up of hundreds of minorities. We are told that Brahmins are the
highest caste. That may have been true a 1000 years ago but in today's India. The richer and enterprising communities are the highest as they would be anywhere. The Sikhs have been way up in the Indian hierrachy.
The Sikhs are addressed as Sardarji, which means leader. They have been admired and respected all over the country not just because they are a prosperous community
but also because they have fought and sacrificed more for India than any other community.Despite being just 2% of India's population, the Sikhs are at least 20% of the Indian Army. So when the separatist movement started in Punjab, it was truly disorienting. The most pariotic of Indians had become alienated from India
Till the 80's the Punjabi Hindus and Sikhs were interchangeable as you would find pictures of the Sikh gurus in every
Punjabi Hindu home. After all, The Sikh people were born of Punjabi Hindus raising their eldest sons as Sikhs.
There has been much misunderstanding in the last 25 years.and alientation among the Sikhs.. but we still regard the Sikhs as our heroes.
