I'm a person of faith but maintain great respect for science. However, I sometimes find that empirical thinkers, no matter how brilliant, are blind to the power of metaphor. The final scene in Sunshine depicting Capa touching the sun seemed like a great twist on the Greek myth of Icurus, but this time a selfless act rather than a selfish one. I expect science fiction to be just that, fiction not fact. In short I hope to see films like this one address the big questions of why, not what. I think Sunshine made a worthy attempt in that direction. Besides, for my money, smart films with action are the best kind of summer entertainment.
