SEARCHLAB / shorts: Terra

Directed by: Aristomenis Tsirbas

An innocent Martian girl is excited about the new “God” in the sky that is orbiting their planet. Against orders, she races to greet the deity, only to be puzzled and horrified in turns to see that this is no deity; rather it is a space battle ship sporting a bullet-ridden flag announcing the arrival of the United States of America.

Err, martians are cool and so are humans.

good film

Terra isn't anti-American, it's anti-Imperialist. If the same short had been made 30 years ago but the ship sported a variation on the USSR flag no American would even bat an eye. 200 years ago it would have been a variation of the UK's flag. Lighten up, Yankee.

very very good animation, i am impressed. extremely well made and interesting, although a nicer more climactic pay off at the end wouldve been better, still though, great short.

It's not a bullet-ridden flag, is a flag with many more than 50 stars...
It does suggest that one way or another there were many more states...

Extremely well made

Sticks out well ahead of the other shorts here. The style and overall quality is very strong. The trick ending works well for such a brief film.

It's technically very good but move into your own style. "You have to make the film personal yours." Fransic Copala

As a space junkie I love it! Very well done, although... I would have LOVED to have seen the ship in full. Something which was not done. The concept of the 'alien' race is very interesting as well. I'll assume psionics or some other natural ability which enables them to fly/float. I say this, because of the old 'man' in the wheel-chair like hover seat. :D

VERY GOOD rendering, VERY GOOD designs. BEAUTIFUL! I look forward to seeing more!

As an American, from the big bad "evil" empire, I must say that I was not offended. :P

A splendid piece by Meni, once again... Technically outstanding and very mellow and riveting story and story-telling wise...

As for the plot and/or it's message (if there is any), I don't think it's anti-American per say, but makes a good point in these troubled times.

Any future space exploration like that would most likely be headed by the US, and using the flag with the multitude of stars, perhaps to indicate conquests? was very effective. I didn't see this as anti-US even though a version of their flag was used. Some existing symbolism of Earth had to be used, the Stars and Stripes is a very well recognised symbol.

I enjoyed the short, look forward to seeing how this series pans out.

Seems futuristic, rather then anti-american. I don't want that version of the flag. I'm American. I like it.

Not bad. Quite the mood piece. Obiously these guys know a thing or two about CGI.

Very nice character design and look. Has a Kubric kind of feel to it.

c'mon...i'm not american....but this is still absurd. but i guess it's easy to jump on the anti-american bandwagon to get a little instant crowd pleasing.

instead of this sillyness, why don't you try digging a little deeper instead of just taking a cheap shot at the big bad "evil" empire and posing your way to get some kind of attention. the only thing that made this barely watchable was some of the visuals/rendering. character design (flying worms?) was terrible. some spots in the acting was nice, but the whole thing felt contrived, kind of like watching a jr. highschool play.

anyway, nice effort. it's cute to pretend you know all about world affairs...but, this kind of treatment "renders" your premise melodramatic at best.
