Frank's (Steve Carell) explanation to Olive at the dinner table for why he attempted suicide went from a somber moment to a funny one because of her reaction.

FROM THE SCRIPT:

Olive:
"Why were you unhappy?"

Frank glances at Richard -- deadpan victorious -- and continues.

Frank:
"Well, there were a lot of reasons. Mainly, though, I fell in love with someone who didn't love me back..."

Olive:
"Who?"

Frank:
"One of my grad students. I was very much in love with him."

Olive:
"Him?? It was a boy? You fell in love with a boy?"

Frank:
"Yes. I did. Very much so."

This is new to Olive. She thinks it over.

Olive:
"That's silly."

Frank:
"You're right. It was very, very silly."

Grandpa:
"There's another word for it."

Richard:
"Dad..."

When a girl wants to know something, you might as well tell her 'cause she's gonna find out anyway. WORD! And that girl can be ages 4 to 104 and it never changes.

fantastic, olive makes a really funny scene, i loved "so, then you tried to..." and uncle frank says "no, really... was very funny!

lol..a BOY? you fell in love with a BOY? This bit always makes me laugh =]

That is an excellent well done scene, I love the way Steve Carell shows sadness but feels completely honest about what he's saying.
