Not only do the steps of Richard's "Refuse to Lose" program sound corny, but Richard isn't exactly a model for success. The "9 Steps" do make for fun reading though, hence their placement in our Top 10. (Searchlighters' three favorites are in bold):
1. Leaving Loserhood: Finding a New Address in a Winner-Takes-All World
2. Aspiration, Inspiration, Perspiration
3. No Hocus Pocus, Just Focus
4. Say No to the Negheads
5. Good Enough is Never Good Enough
6. Trust and Be Trusted
7. Think Big. Act Big... Be Big.
8. Reject Rejection.
9. REFUSE TO LOSE.
You have to give Richard credit for the unshakable confidence he shows in his program. Below he claims his son Dwayne's choice to remain mute until he's a test pilot for the Air Force is proof the "9 Steps" actually work. Um, yeah.
FROM THE SCRIPT:
Richard:
"I think we could all learn something from what Dwayne's doing! Dwayne has a goal. He has a dream. It might not be my dream, or your dream, but still... He's pursuing that dream with focus and discipline. In fact, I was thinking about the Nine Steps..."
Grandpa:
"Oh, for crying out loud!"
Richard (evenly):
"...About the Nine Steps and how Dwayne's utilizing at least seven of them in his journey to personal fulfillment."
Sheryl:
"Richard. Please."
hah. the whole point of the movie is that he was helping people learn to succeed when he couldnt even do it himself. the movie is basically based on irony, so if the dad had been successful it wouldnt have added to the humor at all.
in a real life situation though, that would be a good idea! lol
