Not only do the steps of Richard's "Refuse to Lose" program sound corny, but Richard isn't exactly a model for success. The "9 Steps" do make for fun reading though, hence their placement in our Top 10. (Searchlighters' three favorites are in bold):

1. Leaving Loserhood: Finding a New Address in a Winner-Takes-All World

2. Aspiration, Inspiration, Perspiration

3. No Hocus Pocus, Just Focus

4. Say No to the Negheads

5. Good Enough is Never Good Enough

6. Trust and Be Trusted

7. Think Big. Act Big... Be Big.

8. Reject Rejection.

9. REFUSE TO LOSE.

You have to give Richard credit for the unshakable confidence he shows in his program. Below he claims his son Dwayne's choice to remain mute until he's a test pilot for the Air Force is proof the "9 Steps" actually work. Um, yeah.

FROM THE SCRIPT:

Richard:
"I think we could all learn something from what Dwayne's doing! Dwayne has a goal. He has a dream. It might not be my dream, or your dream, but still... He's pursuing that dream with focus and discipline. In fact, I was thinking about the Nine Steps..."

Grandpa:
"Oh, for crying out loud!"

Richard (evenly):
"...About the Nine Steps and how Dwayne's utilizing at least seven of them in his journey to personal fulfillment."

Sheryl:
"Richard. Please."

Go to "Favorite Thing #9: Frank's Admission at Dinner."

hah. the whole point of the movie is that he was helping people learn to succeed when he couldnt even do it himself. the movie is basically based on irony, so if the dad had been successful it wouldnt have added to the humor at all.

in a real life situation though, that would be a good idea! lol

I think I must all - out with my work just which is said by the nine steps, REFUSE TO LOSE -^-!!!!!!

Richard now has the perfect background from which to launch his own future success using his own 9 Steps...from being rejected as a person "nobody knows" to developing himself into a person EVERYBODY knows via The 9 Steps!

The Nine Steps: Derivative but useful.

The Nine Steps may be derivative (as in taken as an adaptation of another's work), but they're mentioned by just about every other guru I've ever encountered. T. Harv Ekar says "Think Big", in his "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind." Nearly everyone says that you become whom you associate with, so "Say No to the Neg-Heads" makes sense, too. Focus is very important, as mentioned by Brian Tracy in "The Principles of Success". And the fear of rejection is probably one of the biggest obstacles to overcome before doing anything. Just ask anyone who approaches another person for a date. Maybe they're not the most clever of suggestions, but the Nine Steps have a great deal of value, even as brief as they are.

The 9 Stages really do work!
When he says at the first one leave the neighbourhood he's talking about an emotional neighbourhood where you only should hang around with people who will encourage you. What the father should've done is opened a very successful business (using the 9 steps) and then said - look what they made me able to achieve!
