From New York Magazine:
A gross-out Freudian body-horror movie full of tender sympathy. The world of the flesh is icky but, oh, the spirit soars - on even the tackiest wings."
"An enchantingly freakish comedy."
"The best part is Jemaine Clement as Benjamin’s grandiose genre hero, Dr. Ronald Chevalier. Even if you love him on 'Flight of the Conchords,' you’ll be unprepared for his genius - and charisma. Gazing on his young fans, he intones, 'So many juvenescent, ripe minds,' looking and sounding under his dark, heavy beard like James Mason’s Captain Nemo on the verge of a titanic belch.'"
Plus here's an item on a recent Q&A with the cast and crew!
From New York Press:
Among the American Eccentric directors - those filmmakers who came of age in the Star Wars generation - Jared Hess is the most offbeat. That may explain why Hess, director of 2004's 'Napoleon Dynamite,' has come up with the first American Eccentrics sci-fi movie - 'Gentlemen Broncos.'"
"Rather than embarking on the sci-fi genre itself, Hess uses these characters' imaginings of sci-fi and creative fantasy to do something more important and more complicated than a mere sci-fi flick. From character presentation to storyline, 'Broncos' is totally instinctive - not a story film, but a movie of complex, inchoate feelings. It’s about loneliness and vision; the title acknowledges a form of gracious, uncultivated spirit..."
"This is personal filmmaking, surveying the private emotions that generally embarrass people or make us feel out of step - a daring proposition in an era that frantically insists upon marketable conformity."
"Hess uses sci-fi to refocus our view of modern life... The wayward narrative highlights a rich fact: America’s fragmented yet overlapping fantasies, dreams and schemes."
"In 'Gentlemen Broncos,' sci-fi's poignant charms even coexist with churchgoing - note the quilt hanging in Benji’s bedroom of Jesus riding Barney the dinosaur. It’s all part of our authentic and poignant cultural mess..."
Finally, from USA Today's Pop Candy:
Accidental Obsession: 'In the Year 2525'
Ever since I saw Broncos the other night, one song from the soundtrack absolutely refuses to leave my head: In the Year 2525 by the '60s one-hit wonder duo Zager & Evans.
"I don't know if you've heard the tune, but it has to be one of the craziest blends of sci-fi and rock 'n' roll ever recorded, and it's quite surprising that it hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts for six weeks back in 1969. However, it was popular during the moon landing, so perhaps it fit the country's mood at the time..."
