Q&A - Nia Vardalos Loses Her Mojo Prior to My Life in Ruins

Q: Greece. Romantic comedy. Sounds like a tailor made fit. Were you originally set to star in this movie?
A: "I was actually writing at the time. I had been hired by Tom Hanks and Universal to write a script for Tom. I was at their [Rita Wilson & Tom Hanks'] company one day and I mentioned "Hey, this script came to me, through my rep. It's about a tour guide who goes to Greece and falls in love." I told them I'd like to work on the script a little, maybe add to it. I thought it would be very difficult to get permission from the Greek government to shoot at places like the Acropolis, but it would be fascinating if we did. They decided to executive produce. And, slowly, going back and forth to Greece and begging the government for permission, I had to admit I wanted to play the role." - AMCTV.com

Nia Vardalos Is Back & Still Greek!

Like Georgia, her alter ego in the upcoming "My Life in Ruins," actress Nia Vardalos had lost her mojo or what the Greeks call "kefi..."

In real life, there are no such guarantees. The 46-year-old actress confided, "The reason I was losing my mojo was that I was coming to the end of a 10-year battle with infertility. I didn't feel like being on camera. So I took some time off and wrote six scripts. I wrote for John Demme and I wrote for Tom Hanks. My friends and agent realized I just needed to step out. When I found 'My Life in Ruins' I just started revising it to make it authentic. As I was layering some of the things I was going through into the character of Georgia I finally admitted I wanted to be this person. I wanted to be on camera again." - The Hamptons Independent   

Alexis [Georgoulis] is like the George Clooney of Greece. And with the two of us together - it was a paparazzi festival! If my hand happened to touch his shoulder, the cameras would start flashing and we were in all the magazines: Something's going on between these two! Then they would insert a picture of my husband - the most forlorn-looking picture they could find - looking at me like, How could you?! It was hysterical.

Former SNL Offbeat Funny Lady Stars As Obnoxious Tourist In Nia Vardalos' Greek Adventure "My Life In Ruins"

"Nia is very sort of chill about the whole [filmmaking process]. When you’re on set with her, she always has to find the fun in it," Dratch told CBS News during the Festival. The comedienne was in for a surprise throughout the shooting process in Spain and Greece, as Vardalos’ fame abroad almost turned into a distraction while the cast and crew were filming on location. "Nia is like a rock star over there. You walk down the streets of Greece and people just go nuts, it’s like you’re with Tom Cruise or something," Dratch said of her costar. - CBSNews.com

Writer/director/star Nia Vardalos (MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING) was talking to the press over the week-end about what a great year 2008 was. She not only produced two films (I HATE VALENTINE’S DAY, MY LIFE IN RUINS) but also adopted a daughter.
