JUNO and ONCE Both Win Academy Awards®!

Sunday night, February 24th, was Oscar® night and Fox Searchlight's JUNO and ONCE each won their own award this year.

JUNO's Diablo Cody Won "Best Original Screenplay"

Her acceptance speech:
"What is happening? This is for the writers, and I want to thank all the writers. I especially want to thank my fellow nominees because I worship you guys and I'm learning from you every day, so thank you very much. I want to thank the Academy, I want to thank Fox Searchlight, Mr. Mudd, Mandate, Dan Dubiecki. I want to thank our incredible cast including the superhuman Ellen Page. I want to thank Jason Reitman, who I consider a member of my family, and I'm in awe of his talent as a filmmaker. I want to thank Sarah Self. I want to thank Mason Novick who knew I could do this before I did. And most of all, I want to thank my family for loving me exactly the way I am."

ONCE's Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova Won "Best Original Song for "Falling Slowly"

Glen Hansard's acceptance:
"Thanks! This is amazing. What are we doing here? This is mad. We made this film two years ago. We shot on two Handycams. It took us three weeks to make. We made it for a hundred grand. We never thought we would come into a room like this and be in front of you people. It's been an amazing thing. Thanks for taking this film seriously, all of you. It means a lot to us. Thanks to the Academy, thanks to all the people who've helped us, they know who they are, we don't need to say them. This is amazing. Make art. Make art. Thanks."

Marketa Irglova's acceptance:
"Hi everyone. I just want to thank you so much. This is such a big deal, not only for us, but for all other independent musicians and artists that spend most of their time struggling, and this, the fact that we're standing here tonight, the fact that we're able to hold this, it's just to prove no matter how far out your dreams are, it's possible. And, you know, fair play to those who dare to dream and don't give up. And this song was written from a perspective of hope, and hope at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are. And so thank you so much, who helped us along way. Thank you."

Marketa also gave a special online thanks:
"Thank you John Carney!! And my dad who's watching from a hospital bed in Dublin."

Just got my hands on video of Glen's and Marketa's acceptance speeches. Enjoy:

Below is a snapshot of Glen, Marketa and their manager Howard Greynolds backstage at the Oscar® ceremony right after winning their trophies. (If you watched the show last night you've gotta agree the crowd fell in love with these two.)

A BIG congratulations to this year's winners and nominees from Fox Searchlight.

Somebody said hope twice, and then the movie connected to the whole Barack Obama thing, hope connects us all. Hope at the start hope at the end, Grey brick upon brick, in Irish poetry this used to be called a duna (a closure). Great stuff, real art, in real life Christian Louboutin Boots.

It was a really good movie. The acting was superb and I thought the plot was unique and never seen it done...so well. Like, "Knocked UP", it takes a look at pregnancy and relationships in a whole new way.

Please, I still havent seen Trav's tape on here. He's the top candidate and they havent showed his tape on the site. What could they possibly want if they cant see he's it! A HUGE CONGRATS on winning the Oscar! It was the first time I have yelled a loud YES! while watching the Academy Awards--my wife jumped. I saw ONCE for the first time a few weeks ago and still can't get your music out of my head. Every time it starts playing, I am transported back to the piano store scene, where we witnessed your movie relationship blossom through music...and how we envision your real connection was established and why it endures today. sinema izle film izle film

I can understand her feelings at the time. But what if 5 years from now, the adoptive Mother is dying of cancer and a change of custody must be determined? Five years from now, Juno might be wealthy, married, have a child or two of her own. Shouldn't she be informed at this point of a serious situation involving her child?

OK. It was a really good movie. The acting was superb and I thought the plot was unique and never seen it done...so well. Like, "Knocked UP", it takes a look at pregnancy and relationships in a whole new way.

Like the movie "Waitress", the heroine is pregnant and on a fast crash course of life discovery. That is all good. Hurray for Hollywood for stepping out of the box.

Now the flip side: Remember I have been a social worker most of my life...I think I have seen it all. I say that carefully, because if I say I have seen it all, right around the corner comes some bizarre freakin sad situation...that I have never seen before. And somethings you just never get used too.

Want to smack the parents in this movie. Surprised? Yes, they were cool, and they seem to support her decisions pretty well. But...

I have worked with adoption agencies. People who put an add in Penny Saver, may have money, but sometimes it is a red flag. An agency does a back ground check. They do lots of investigation.

The Dad did not ask the right questions. He went with Juno to meet the couple. But from there he was a pile of shit bump on the log. The lawyer and couple were in controll of that situation.

OK. Juno is 16. She is making some huge choices that will effect her whole life. Seldom do we know everthing at 16, and at my age...I don't know much at all. I just have feelings.

She says, no, I don't need compensation. I am not selling a baby. Well, I think that no one is ever selling a baby, but, what agencies and prospective parents can do is offer a two year scholarship to a college or trade school. They can also send Juno to Disneyland with friends for a week, after her ordeal is over. She is being overly self sacrificing and everyone is OK with it. Who is in her corner? I don't think her family is rich. If an agency or a lawyer were involved on her behalf...it would have been a more balanced negotiation.

She also votes for a closed adoption. I can understand her feelings at the time. But what if 5 years from now, the adoptive Mother is dying of cancer and a change of custody must be determined? Five years from now, Juno might be wealthy, married, have a child or two of her own. Shouldn't she be informed at this point of a serious situation involving her child?

Again, everyone just shruggs this off in the movie.

Baby's have fingernails. At this point I am running my fingernails down the TV screen wanting to tear up the writer and director.

OK. Juno is smart. So where is the sex education coming from in her high school? From her parents? Also, if there is an opps. Let's say a condom breaks, that happened to a friend of mine. There is a morning after pill. Can a morning after pill raise controversy? Hey, there are no fingernails yet, or heartbeat, or hopefully no conception. There are a few other options like menstrual extraction...for the 1 week late syndrom. The doctors do not confirm or deny a pregnancy, they just do a routine D and C.

Instead, of telling Juno what a trouper she is and such a smart little thing. Let's get her some real help.

You guys all must know some teen age girls. Lets push for better contraception and better education.????

People.

It was a good movie. For the most part. Thank God they allowed her to have a spinal block...even though she might have wanted to endure all that pain...and suffering.

She was noble and brave and I have respect for all that. It is the adults...I want to smack around for just a second.

OK...

Agreed. THANK YOU.
I cried my heart out at Juno because people were laughing at things they shouldn't be laughing at.
There was so much left out.
There was an opportunity to get really important topics out there like the morning after pill and sex education.
The quirkiness was distracting from the real trauma and the only time it got close to real was when she pulled over in the car and cried her heart out.
As a woman who has been there, Juno broke my heart by denying the depth of fear and pain young girls go through.
It would have been good to explore what make Juno make the choices she did.
Oh well. There was hype and it seemed to me that the guys liked it more in the theater and laughed more.
I was more than disappointed. I was heartbroken.

ONCE WIDE RELEASE IS NEEDED AND DESERVED
COME ON FOX. DVD sales at 45 for ONCE on AMAZON??? Beaten out by a lot of drivel?... They deserve better. Promote quality.
Those who saw this movie loved it. It changes lives....really!!! Please, for Paddy's Day, for whatever excuse you need but for the love of God and all that is holy, please give this a wide theater release.

WIDE RELEASE IN THEATERS PLEASE!
FOX SEARCHLIGHT,
PLEASE RELEASE THIS INTO THE BIG THEATERS. SO MANY PEOPLE STILL DON"T KNOW HOW GOOD THE MOVIE IS.
Major congrats and thanks to John Carney, Glen and Mar for bringing us such joy and hope.

First, I would like to say I watch a lot of movies. When I saw “Once” at the Angelika Movie Theater in Frisco Texas I knew it was a great movie. It was so good I purchased the CD. Thru my efforts and the CD playing in my car and at parties, I personally pushed over 100 friends to go see the movie. Great job you “Hoover fixer upper Guy” and Marketa your soft voice and your tender approach to those around you truly make you a star. Hope to see you both in more searchlight productions in the future.

Thank you so much for making this film. It is dear to my heart, and I only saw it 20 minutes ago. It is so amazingly simple, breathaking, melancholy. I still have the chills from it. And the music is so inspiring and big-hearted. Thank you so much!!

Glen and Marketa:

Thanks for creating such a wonderful film and music just as great if not more so. I went straight out to buy the soundtrack after seeing ONCE and am glad it is now available on DVD.

Congratulations on your Academy Award win--"Falling Slowly" had no competition in my opinion. Keep making music and keep making movies--you've certainly found the secret ingredients for both.

the whole oscar thing, then recollection of how this movie first affected me, on first seeing. Bringing you back to your dreams of being a musician, tentatively trying out, then playing in an instrument store, first gaining passive acceptance of the store clerk, then to the acceptance of a the cynic sound engineer at the studio, then the same movie continues through sundance, through Kodak. A speech and then another speech in Irish Eastern European accented english. Somebody said hope twice, and then the movie connected to the whole Barack Obama thing, hope connects us all. Hope at the start hope at the end, Grey brick upon brick, in Irish poetry this used to be called a duna (a closure). Great stuff, real art, in real life. Congrats. We saw for the first time, I think a movie actually reach its end point at the Oscar ceremony. Yes? No? What do you think.

My son Adam who is an indie music lover and has been a fan of the Frames for ever, rented Once and we watched it together and I fell in love with the music , the simplicity of the story and the charisma between you both.
I am 58 and grew up with the 60 music and well as motown and I tell you I am so in love with your music
Please keep up and congratulations to you both and all who were involved

Congratulations!

a friend of mine was looking for a movie to watch on-line last year, early June. At our weekly musical gathering of song writers, she played for a friend what she could remember of Falling Slowly. This was the beginning of our obsession with Once. We saw it when it opened in Knoxville and learned to play several songs from the sound track.

And it influenced me as a song writer.

Thanks for the inspiration of music, of hope, and most of all, of being-ness.

ONCE stole the show. What a great result and SOOOO well deserved.

You are humble, gracious and extraordinarily talented people with wonderful hearts.

It's so great to see honesty win over artificiality and pretentiousness!!!!

You guys have stolen my heart! HUGE congratulations to the most charming duo at the Oscars!

Glen and Marketa,

Every time it starts playing, I am transported back to the piano store scene, where we witnessed your movie relationship blossom through music...and how we envision your real connection was established and why it endures today. My family is vacationing in Ireland this Summer, which makes John Carney's movie and your music all the more relavent to us. Please keep gifting us with new music.

Tanks!

Well done Glen and Marketa and everyone thats been involved in them becoming the stars they are now today. They truly have taught us what is going on in their hearts, and shined brilliantly on Oscar night as they do on stage together most nights.

I have to say what others have not said so far and that is that without Mar, and her symbiotic musical love for/with Glen, this would never of happened. "if you love me" on its own was/is Oscar worthy IMO. She makes him, or has made him after all his years with my favorite band the Frames, working his tail off to get places, especially here in Chicago , the award winner he is today. I guess sometimes it takes a special person to make someone more special, and in this case it could not be more true!

Still have their first tour at Schubas at the very beginning and some nice pics! Never forgetting Colm and the lads, big shout out!

your friend always,

ronnie_regan@excite.com

happy endings all around!
