BOSTON
Boston NOW's John Black gave DARJEELING 5 out of 5 stars and titled his review, "Welcome Aboard the Movie of the Year: Anderson Hits New High With Darjeeling."
He goes on to say, "One viewing of this Wes Anderson film and you will have to admit that it's certainly the most interesting, offbeat and downright enjoyable film of 2007." (Full review.)
The Harvard Crimson's Andrew Nunnelly also gave TDL 5 out of 5 stars, saying about both DARJEELING and Wes's short film HOTEL CHEVALIER (now available on iTunes): "The two films share the remarkable confidence of an extraordinary director well into his prime." (Full review.)
CHICAGO
The Chicago Sun-Times's Roger Ebert gave TDL 3.5 out of 4 stars!
"Anderson is like Dave Brubeck... He knows every note of the original song, but the fun and genius come in the way he noodles around. And in his movie's cast, especially with Owen Wilson, Anderson takes advantage of champion noodlers." (Full review.)
The Chicago Tribune's Michael Phillips gave TDL 3 out of 4 stars, saying, "This one has a heart... Director Wes Anderson's latest is arch in the extreme, a work of exacting eccentricity. It is also Anderson's most interesting film after 'Rushmore.'" (Full review.)
SAN FRANCISCO
The SF Weekly's Nathan Lee:
"Darjeeling is a movie about people trapped in themselves and what it takes to get free — a movie, quite literally, about letting go of your baggage. We bring our own to the movies, so let me cop to mine. I was moved by Darjeeling, flaws and all." (Full review.)
TORONTO
The Toronto Star's Peter Howell gave TDL 3 out of 4 stars. And so did The National Post's Barry Hertz, who had this to say:
"Anderson makes films like no one else. His latest effort, The Darjeeling Limited, stays true to his winning formula while advancing his skills as a filmmaker, ensuring copycat directors will have a tough time aping his style anytime soon."
He added, "The Darjeeling Limited is something meant to be celebrated." (Full review.)
The Globe & Mail's Rick Groen pointed out in their own positive review, "Wes Anderson has a flair for making his clans seem bizarrely unique and yet recognizable too. His secret is to push the weirdness up to the realistic breaking point, but never quite beyond." (Full review.)
Both The Metro News's Rick McGinnis and the Toronto Eye Weekly's Kieran Grangave the movie 4 out of 5 stars. Here are a couple of quotes from the Eye:
"...The packaging is remarkable. Anderson's vision is so specific that, rather than exoticize India, he frames it as it exists in his universe, right down to the excellent mix of Kinks songs and old Bollywood soundtracks."
"...As in Anderson's best movies, The Darjeeling Limited says something affirming and paints a lovely picture in the process." (Full review.)
