Searchlight's own Russian-born Natalya answered a few of our questions about the "Night Watch" novels, which ultimately spawned the movies NIGHT WATCH (2006) and its sequel DAY WATCH (June 1st, 2007).

See what Natalya had to say below!

Is the author of "The Night Watch" novels, Sergei Lukyanenko, well-known in Russia?

"Most definitely. He is one of the most popular science fiction writers in Russia. Since the 1980's Sergei wrote around 30 novels. The famous "Night Watch" books were published around 1998 and eventually sold over 2 million copies worldwide."

Could you name an American author with a similar level of popularity/fame in this country?

"Dan Brown ('The Da Vinci Code'), James Patterson ('Cross'), and Stephen King."

Why do you think the "Night Watch" books received all the attention they did in Russia?

"I think Sergei’s strikingly original writing style made him very popular. Every single book has elements of suspense, psychological drama, and humor (all at the same time!) His books are so engaging and addictive that once you start reading, you literally can’t stop."

What role did the books play in the success of their cinematic counterparts?

"The popularity of the books definitely played a tremendous role in the success of Day Watch and Night Watch films. These books are so intriguing, thought-provoking, and original that they will make anyone anxious to see Night Watch and Day Watch. I am sure everyone who has read the novels has also watched both films."

How closely do the films NIGHT WATCH and DAY WATCH follow their literary predecessors?

"The novels are quite different from the movies. NIGHT WATCH barely follows the events in the book, and DAY WATCH only covers a second half of that same book. Confused? If you’re a big fan of the film, then I highly recommend reading 'Nochnoy Dozor,' as it makes the film far more coherent and enjoyable."

Tell me your overall impressions of each of those two books.

"What I really like about these books is the fact that they have a philosophical side: they touch upon a fundamental human dilemma as to what it is that separates good from bad in the most mundane sense (as opposed to the extreme saintly vs. evil sense). This exploration (which is helped by the author being a qualified psychiatrist) is what gives the books its depth and makes them more introspective and existential."

I LOVE TWILIGHT AND EDWARD CULLEN ;-]

idiot

I love the Night Watch Series. It is honestly one of my favourite book series. I'm just waiting for The Final Watch to be released here. My country is kinda slow with them. And I just saw the Film The Night Watch a little while ago. In Russian and English. And although it chops up the story and adds little parts that are either from the 2nd novel or slightly made up it still links together and is absolutely amazing. I never really had a face for Anton (even if he is my favourite) but Konstantin Khabenskiy just immediatly filled up that blank face.

I'm actually really absolutely gutted that Fox Searchlight will film the Twilight Watch. In English. It just doesn't make any sense. There is just something that American directors, actors etc etc will not be able to achieve. It will turn into a horrible Blockbuster. And they have to be speaking Russian of course.

There is nothing wrong with filming in another language then English. Other languages have Dubs and subtitles for English films. We should be fine with that. The English Dub for The Night Watch was pretty good, I didn't mind it.

So to sum it up The novel series is amazing and I hope more of Lukyanenko's books will be translated, although the films now are just a gist of the book (still great) having an American studio make the film IN ENGLISH with English speaking actors etc etc is just going to take away any goodness and just leave it as some lame hollywood blockbuster.
Anyway Konstantin Khabenskiy is just wow! being Anton. And the Character for Alice to and Sveltana even Egor!

ohhh no.

If Fox searchlight is going to make the 3rd movie wholly english with english/american actors instead of a natively russian movie with english subtitles - I am not going to support it.

Plus, it being a foreign film gives the viewer more of a sense of being part of an entirely new world.

Aside from that, Harry potter didn't get different actors for each non-english speaking country did they? Having the movie stay in a completely russian format allows them to showcase some of Russia's most gifted actors and make us appreciate Russia's capactity to deliver a spectacular array of films and literary content.

Keep it original.Keep it Russian.

Books are better than the films but thats always the case as with the potter series too.

The last film is to be called final watch as with the last book.

If they change actors or actresses now they will ruin the whole series, even worse if the americans take over... they like to do things like that though so i guess if they want to there is no stopping them.

I cannot reason with it; it is without reason.

I am so sorry that they may change the actors in the next film- no one is going to be able to touch Konstantine Khabensky as Anton. It will also lose the grainy integrity that filming in Russia offers. It is such a mistake to go sticking our American two cents in to such a Russian feat.

Final Watch...
I can not wait till Final Watch gets translated into English... on top of the fact i cant wait till Twilight/Dusk Watch is released in the US. i just finished Twilight Watch. it seams these books get better and better.
As dumb as this may sound, because long on going sagas can lose their touch, but i don't want these books to stop.
I'm at the point were i want to read all Sergei Lukyanenko's books.

Can't wait for Final Watch to be translated. Haven't seen it anywhere yet.

twilight watch and the final watch are they already published here in america? (translated in english)

I 've read all "watches" - "Night watch","day watch", "twilight watch" and "last watch". Each book consists of three parts - three cases of Night Watch patrol. Both movies are based on a first two parts of a first book - "night watch"? but with few turns of second book as well. For instance, Alisa is one of the main caracters of Day Watch book - in first one her role is very secondary.
I like Lukianenko very much, he is really uses a heritage of soviet'russian sci-fi very good.

I didn't read Night Watch before I have seen the first movie (in its Russian edit), and I have to say, it was still comprehensible. However, reading the book made lots of motifs in the movie more clear. On the other hand, it made me wonder why a director takes some perfectly cinemographic moments from the book and makes something other out of it - making the result not better, but worse.

As for Day Watch - it has even less to do with the stories of the book. Especially the finale is a big deviation, which is quite permissible for artistic license. However, after the movie's finale I seriously doubt that FOX will be able to make a third movie without losing connectivity with the first two. And this is what I am afraid of - that they will make a rather mediocre Americanized sequel.

I hope the americans will look more too the books, because they are so good they can easily be changed into movie scripts.

I only saw Nightwatch and it was a great movie but the books give it more depth.
I think it could be a franchise making maybe six movies out of the three books.

Then everything in the books would come out better than in the movies.
But as allways movies can never replace the books, the books are allways better because your own mind is the director and sometimes actors can spoil it for you.

Allthough i liked the russian actors, they were all suited for their parts.

Thats all i think.

Rain

As an American I am not pleased my country has decided to ruin the new movie "Twilight Watch" by turning a great series that I would gladly watch in its native language any day into a bloated, overbudgeted, overloaded with sfx, English movie.

What series starts in Russian and ends in English??
In fact, what series has ever started in one language and ended in a completely different one?

WHAT WAS FOX THINKING?!

Reminds me of the time Fox took two R rated Horror/Action classics - Alien and Predator - and made a substandard horrible PG-13 hybrid AVP.

Knock this up there with one of the worst mistakes in cinema history.

// Rant Over

I want to read the books myself as the first two movies were spectacular and I will be buying them soon.

I read Night Watch before the release of the original film in the series. It may have helped me to understand the film, because I was very clear about the sequence of events, and even recognized the point at which it cut off from the book. (The book is quite long, but there are clear breaks between storylines.)

The books are very entertaining, with humanly written characters in unique positions. I don't read Russian, but can tell you that for reading solely the English version, the translations are well done. I don't feel that I missed out by not being able to read the original text. Humor and concepts still made sense, and the characters' personalities were preserved.

I can wholeheartedly recommend both the book and film series.
