USA Today came out with a feature today on THE NAMESAKE'S Kal Penn, which includes a big photo in print of Kal, Jacinda Barrett, and Tabu.

The article reveals that next year Kal will teach two classes at the University of Pennsylvania. He says, "One of the classes is on images of contemporary Asian-Americans in the media, and the other one is on the history of the teen movie."

The article also goes on to say about both Kal and THE NAMESAKE, "Since opening March 9, [THE NAMESAKE] has taken in almost $7 million, a strong showing for such a small film. Penn's performance has also wowed critics. Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman calls Penn 'a fantastic actor' whose 'eyes are full of fury and desire,' while The New York Times' Stephen Holden praises his 'crackling star performance.'"

I have read the book, I have seen the movie. Congrats to Mira and Jhumpa. I enjoyed both artistic views of living in America and India via the film & book. These show the true views and feelings of a ABCD. Kal Penn great job and congrats!!! May this movie show the true colours of the people living in America who have just come or even 2nd generation Indian Americans. All the best may god bless you and may you show and write more on these topics !!!!!

I hope Mira Nair reads this. This is coming from an architect and a film buff of over 50 years starting in India with Daag, and Andaz to Moscow of Andrey Rublyov.
Mira Nair is a consummate director…first with Monsoon Wedding and then with Namesake. Superlative! I want her to become incomparable. One observation, and it is not a criticism, just observation of watching films everyday for over 50 years :: I know Nair wants to remain as authentic as possible with characters which is admirable. However, our Indian facial features are such that if they are not slightly overexposed with light, the faces exude an impending dark and foreboding doom. And so, even when the character laughs, a sinister aura takes over everything else. Talking purely visual here. In that, the director loses the advantage of a neutral expression in which the audience projects the most intense desired feelings of their own. Mira Nair, You are great. You will be the greatest! Salahuddin Choudhury. Virginia Tech. USA.

probably most of the indian immigrants can feel it is there story.the movie depicts the problems faced by immigrants raising there children in a culture and country
different from theirs.

I have been in anticipation for this movie since I read the book. It gave voice to so many emotions that I have had as a kid coming to America and starting a new life, making new friends. This is simply a magnificient movie! Their is no better collaboration than with Mira Nair and Jhumpa Lahiri. This movie is a feast for the eyes and moves the soul like no other. You don't have to be of Indian Origin to enjoy or relate to this movie.

One of the finest movies in recent times.Brought tears to my adult eyes.I will see it again and again.

I would recommend an audio book of namesake read by Sarita Chowdhury. I drive 2 hrs twice a week and this audio book has been my companion for last 2 weeks. Driving will never be the same again without namesake. Simply put: marvelous.

The movie honors Ms. Lahiri in bringing to the screen the emotions evoked in her novel. We are a product of our circumstances and I feel that maturity brings us to respect our cultural upbringing and heritage. The beauty of being in America is that we are allowed to express our individuality. We can bring to our lives that part of our cultural inheritance that will enhance our spirits. We do lose something in the process sometimes. Sometimes we end up more enlightened than our parents.

This film is more than just about the Indian family. It touches on all who come from varied backgrounds and try to blend into a culture which encourages being like your American neightbor and dropping your own heritage. The question is, what would have happened eventually had the tragedy of his father's death not taken place? Would he have married his blond American girl friend and given up his birth identity? How many of us, parents who try to raise children within certain traditions, find that in adulthood they defect from their innate identity, and sever the lineage continuity? Does it take a tragey to shake the "modern" generation back into continuing the family lines and traditions?

This was one of the rare instances where I found the movie to be better than the book. Absolutely stunning and emotional.

My uncle who is a US citizen went as a first generation immigrant to US and raised both his sons there. He was recently in India to solemnise his son's marriage to an American according to the Indian traditions. When i saw the movie and read the novel I could understand the emotional tribulations he must have gone through bringing up his children in the US.
3 cheers to Jhumpa Lahiri and Mira Nair for all the brilliant effort.

A masterpiece! I had worried that the big screen might detract from the intimacy at the heart of the novel. But far from it -- the film enriches the story amazingly, in transporting us back and forth between India (crowds, music, architecture) and the US.

The movie was great, but really? Kal Penn teaching? His acting was the only part that was a real drawback.

Otherwise, I thought the movie was beautiful, and a beautiful adaptation of the original novel.

What didn't you like about his acting?

this was a great movie
I was saying every time "This is me"

This is my story
my wife story

This movie was so amazing that I saw it twice! I love it so much, I quote it all the time and Ellen Page is my new favorite actress she is so funny. Ku-dos to Juno and all wholesale lingerieinvolved. I will be the first person at the store buying Juno on DVD.I just saw this movie with my 20 and 23 year old and we loved it! How brilliant. Such a good script that had everything that a movie requires to be lingeriesuccessful. The casting was perfect and the soundtrack was creative.

After living in Asia with my family for 37 years and having traveled to India with our children 5 times, I wanted to see this film. It was wonderful and conveys so much history and so many values at the core of an Indian family...both in India and the West...lovely film....katie

I thought this was the best movie I have seen in years.
