Where Does DAY WATCH Fit Into the Trilogy?

Thomas on March 19th, 2007

DAY WATCH opens in the U.S. on June 1st. It is the sequel to NIGHT WATCH and thus the second installment of this fabled Russian trilogy. We've provided a re-cap of it all for you below!

THE TRILOGY
These films center around the modern-day conflict between the Light and Dark forces of "Others:" supernatural humans and monsters (including vampires, witches, shape-shifters and sorcerers) who live among us. A thousand years ago the two sides called a truce to their fierce battles; the agreement entailed that the Dark Others would police the day -- and the Light Others would police the night.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE TRILOGY
NIGHT WATCH and its sequels are based on best-selling Russian sci-fi novels. NIGHT WATCH was released in Russia in July of 2004 and soared as the highest-grossing film in Russian cinematic history, out-pacing both SPIDERMAN 2 and LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING. Searchlight bought the international distribution rights to the film and it subsequently opened in American theaters in early 2006.

The entire trilogy embraces multiple genres, spanning from horror to sci-fi to epic fantasy. While DUSK WATCH has yet to be shot, both NIGHT WATCH and DAY WATCH revel in state-of-the-art special effects, fast-paced action and high suspense. Some view them as Russia's answer to THE MATRIX films and LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy.

NIGHT WATCH
NIGHT WATCH takes place in modern-day Moscow, and the fate of humanity depends on this delicate balance between the Light and Dark -- only now this fantastical cold war is beginning to unravel. An ancient prophecy foretells that one day a “Great One” will emerge, with the power to end this struggle once and for all, which casts Anton Gorodetsky (of the Light) into the center of it. Anton must bring the little boy with the power of peace to the Light.

DAY WATCH
In DAY WATCH each side has gained a powerful Great Other: Anton Gorodetsky’s son, Yegor has joined the ranks of the Dark Others, while Anton’s love Svetlana is the hope of the Light. Not only is Anton caught between them but he's accused of murder and on the run. Only the ancient Chalk of Fate can save the day -- but it was lost hundreds of years ago…

I just saw Night Watch and was quite pleased! I am very happy to see a good movie, it's been awhile. I am pissed off thou that it is taking so long for Fox to get the movie to America, and even more pissed that the last in the series may be filmed here in the U.S.. Hollywood is on crack like most of it's actors are! This movie needs to stay in Russia with the original cast. I wish Fox would stop playing fairy games with the fans and release the dvd in the U.S. and not wait more then a year after the movie was shot. The only thing Hollywood movie exec's are good for these days is killing creativity!

I have been looking forward to the the next release in the trilogy ever since I saw the first. They have proven yet again that great movies don't only come Hollywood!

I've seen this - got a subtitled version from Russia - it is even better than the first one! These days most great movies come from everywhere but Hollywood...

The first one was freaking awesome. I went into it with low expectations and I was utterly surprised. Hollywood has their work cut out for them.

Can we have more information on the projected content of Dusk Watch, please? Fans have heard that it was going to be a prequel shot in America with American actors. Thanks.

I got the chance to see Day Watch and I just have to say it is fantastic. It's cooler than Night Watch, with more character development, great music, great visual effects (and originality), and an awesome ending.

Anonymous | March 27th, 2007 04:13

looks like a rehash of the first one to me

I watched this last night and was blown away. I LOVED Night Watch, and Day Watch is BETTER. It's completely gorgeous.

These films are proof that American cinema is currently uneventful and completely lacking in story. This Saga was obviously created with a deep sense of love and craftsmanship. American film is only about money making now. Everyone can get something out of these films. There is a perfect balance of story and effects. It seems that foreign filmakers are the only director's that distributor's allow to keep their artistic integrity.

I love these movies they are so close and true to the books. Day watch will kick my country off it's behind. The special effects and intense story will keep you on the edge of your seats.

Anonymous | April 23rd, 2007 22:23

i work at a movie store and came across nightwatch by accident. it is so sweet. i am a fan of fantasy, sci-fi, and "artsy" films. i am so glad to hear it is a trilogy and that it is more involved.

Anonymous | April 24th, 2007 06:08

The first movie was amazing. I cannot wait for the second and third. If only more movies were like this...

Anonymous | June 24th, 2008 02:50

I agree. This man-made story is as good as man-made story about the God, maybe even better. Only difference is that people are not killing each other in the name of "Night Watch"

Anonymous | July 20th, 2007 08:06

Anyone who knocks this movie needs to just stay the hell out this is for fans not fuckers who have a closed mind. The only reason they can't like this movie is because they are too fucking dumb to understand how to whipe their own ass. So on the behalf of all the fans of the film ethir stay the hell out or keep your fagit mouth shut because being damed is more then just a word.

He got better with practice. That's why they have classes 'n' stuff.

Hey... Have you ever heard of constructive criticism? Since you seem to think you are such a critic - and an expert on the subject then maybe you and your friends should film your own movie and we can all give you some of our piece of minds.

I don't even think you understood what the movie what about - the plot.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for the explaintion. I have Night Watch and Day Watch they are awsome. But I Day Watch didn't come out in my state which really ticked me off. But the movies are very different then the books and I just wanted to know how Anton a seer can teloport by jumping through glass and stop a large sheet of glass from falling on him. Because a seer dosent have that type of power. I know i'm reading to much in to this but I just need to know if he is a great other like he becomes at the end of the series.
But serously thankyou for sticking up for the movie unlike the A holes above this latter.

Hi! I am from Russia. I love Night Watch and Day Watch because this films is very best russian films. All our films is bad and uninteresting but Night Watch and Day Watch do in Russia big furor because before their realeses in Russia do not made films with special effects. American filmmakers said:"No bad film".Now russian kinoindustry is quicly grow and we became do just sci-fi films with special effects ("Paragrapf 78","Apocalypse code","Not time for Dragons","Streetracers","Genom","Warriors of 40 isles","Mongol", first russian 3D-animation film "Krakatuk").How you think, can Russian does films like Holliwood's films?

Hey guys... Just learn Russian. I've already seen Night and Day Watch a billion times, and I'm reading the third book. Beats waiting around for Fox to get it out. If you liked Night Watch, Day Watch will totally blow you away. A lot more money was put into the film, and it shows!

Please someone can answer me , Because i just saw day watch
( its amazing ) and I can understand the end of the movie... Anton at last return to be a human on Day Watch and its looks like to me the final of the trilogy ...
What is mean of the end and how the third movie connecting to story ( since anton return to be a human ) ???
please someone help me ? :/

Anonymous | May 13th, 2007 23:47

silly question, are you guys downloading it?
its released in australia in october, 6 months after america... stupid... want to watch it!!!

Anonymous | May 15th, 2007 23:20

I just saw a screening of this and OMG was it amazing. It is certainly not a rehash of the first one. It was totally and epic movie and I am looking forward to the third part!

Anonymous | May 19th, 2007 20:34

Ok I can answer the best I can. Being an other just dosent mean you turn it to like being bitten or something. You are born as an other and if something dramatic happens to you that power within you will awaken. If Anton and Svetlana get in a car accident by chance either Anton, Svetlana or both will become others. Just a weird event that will change their lives or force them to use that hidden power will change that. On the plus side anton still remembers everything so he might still have the knowlegde of being an other.

Now that I have answered your question can you answer one of mine? I haven't seen the second one yet but I have seen a few clips and the end but there is something bothering me. Anton was a seer in the first one but in the second he is doing some crazy stuff that a seer wouldn't be able to do, like jumping through glass and end up somewhere els or when Edgor and Svetlana were fighting and the glass was about to drop on Anton but time just stopped and that was the end of the clip. The question is, is anton a magican or a great other or is Geser or someone els helping him?

Seems to me that some people, especially in the US (Hollywood, i mean) are beginning to realize that European cinema has just started to get some really good kicks in the butt of the american movie industry. We are frakkin tired, you know? Arnie? old..Stallone..? Done with that.Die Hard 4? OMFG...Really, Hollywood, open your eyes and start doing something interesting, not just for the money, but for the entertainment and quality. We are tired of wacked-down, beaten almost to death, bleeding but not dying heroes, the "oh so big" GI's "we can take'em all" movies, the awful dramas, the stupid comedies - and corresponding weak humour -, the "America is the best" movies, the boring superheroes (Spidey's, Supermen, Freaktastic 4 - and why do they all come from the U.S.?..), and all the imense amount of wasted film, just to annoy everybody.. So gather your intelligence and go do something better.Go find a nice, compelling storyline. Go find real actors and actresses. Go find something different. And forget the money, just because the more money you pay to your actors, the worse the films they make...

I saw Day Watch on Russian mere than a year ago (coolest movie we EVER made:) And I heard that ther is going to be third movie, but its gonna be filmed in Hollywood and most likely with new actors:((( Too bad, because Khabensky is the BEST!!! Thre is total of four books in Nochnoi Dozor series, at least for now. Can't wait to see the third one (in Russian) with Khabensky.

Just saw Day Watch here in San Francisco. Loved the special effects. I am now looking for a copy of Night Watch I can't wait for the third installment Dusk Watch. It's to bad that a good movie like Day Watch is playing only on one small screen in the city and only one show time.

Anonymous | June 21st, 2007 22:18

Are you guys smoking crack!??!?!?!
Nightwatch and Daywatch were both horrible!!!!!
Nightwatch the worst. Cheap special effects, the "light" and the "dark". Give me break, that isn't original at all. So cheesey!!!!! Seems like a group of homeless kids filmed this. I think Russian films are terrible. If this is the best one according to them, then I wonder how bad all the others are... I watched Nightwatch with about 10 other people and we were all so bored through the entire film. I watch a lot of foreign films but that was by far the worst. Too predictable and boring...
These movies are a waste of money, THAT is why it isn't showing at a lot of theaters.

Anonymous | June 23rd, 2007 20:07

Seems like a group of homeless kids filmed this.
Well thank you for that, it just goes to show that homeless kids from Russia are on par with Hollywood, except the kids have way better plots, characters, stories, pretty much everything is better.

It's playing in Berkeley at the Shattock Theater and this is the last week. I didn't even know it was in San Francisco. I would have gone but it left already. I'll probably go see it in Berkeley if I have a chance.
I saw Night Watch on DVD and I hope I can see Day Watch this week.

An excellent movie by any measure!

This is a great realization of some interesting concepts and the fact that it spans myth, lore, urban legend and sci-fi make it unique.

Night Watch was excellent and I expect Day Watch and Dusk Watch to be even better.

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

;-)

Miami Movie Maverick

Anonymous | June 24th, 2007 14:03

Indeed this film is more original than the barrage of similar projects we get from Hollywood. I still love H-Town but the Russians did very well with this movie.

Give credit where credit is due and stop being silly. I agree, many things were very well done here.

Which homeless person could flip a truck over someone?

Take a time out! :-)

Anonymous | June 24th, 2007 14:06

Cheers!

I agree!

Anonymous | June 24th, 2007 14:08

There should be a wider release in the Miami area!

(hint, hint)

It's not too late right?

does anyone had any idea as to when the sequel will hit the asia region? i love the first movie and i'm hoping to God that they'll show up here soon as well

Anonymous | June 28th, 2007 05:43

Read the books there is a lot explained there that is not explained in the movie. Also the movies are sort of conglomerates of the books. I tend to be a little die hard about my lit, but the movies are fun and have some pretty amazing quotes. I may be misquoting, but "wise one's say he will become a dark other because but it is easier for a man to snuff out the light inside himself than than dispell the darkness around him." is a remarkable statement on morality in humans. at any rate. as far as Anton's power, In the books it is explained that he reaches first level by part way through twilight watch and becomes an unclassifiable magician (thanks to kostya, and a "forbidden spell" by the end of it.
He is a magician with a number of powers of a seer. and once an other becomes unclassifiable, vampire, werewolf, seer or anyother there is a certain similarity because the ability to create "magic" from the raw power becomes feasible.
anyway. it's a great series and jsut because it's confusing to the majority of americans does not make it bad. honestly the american cinematic population disgusts me. no attention span and a plebian take on storyline.

Anonymous | October 22nd, 2008 21:11

sure now i think ur gonna say that the american goverment is way better than what the russian had in soviet union. right? now i think ur too american to open ur mind to something outside ur fucking 50 states.

Anonymous | July 27th, 2007 21:21
