In honor of THE NAMESAKE and Kal Penn's character "Gogol," we asked Searchlight employees about the origins of their own first names -- and received some interesting answers. See the results below!

Veronica
"Veronica is a very common name in Argentina, my homeland, and my parents
thought it was pretty."

Sonia
"My parents named me Sonia because it means "wisdom and light" and because
it's Spanish, like my momma's momma would have liked."

KJ
"My name is pretty different, and since I am a child of the 70s, my
parents wanted to be different so they created my name by joining two
boy's names together... 'KJ' stands for 'Kristjon.'"

Natalya

"I was named after my grandma. Also, my parents really liked
the Latin meaning of my name (rebirth, the one that prolongs
life)."

Roya
"My mom always wanted to name her daughter Roya -- it means "dream" in
Farsi (Persian). My last name means "lawyer." Guess what my parents
wanted me to be when I grew up?"

Ruth
"I was named after a kick-ass great aunt."

Samantha
"I was named after the TV show 'Bewitched' because it's the only thing my
parents both liked to watch. My middle name, Avrah, is the name of some girl
in a TV movie my Mom and Dad watched where there was a father\daughter scene
and that's when my Dad decided he wanted children. (Lame.)"

Paula
"I'm named after my grandma Paula."

Loren (short for Lorenzo)
"They wanted a socially maladjusted child."

Jason
My mother liked watching 'The Waltons' and my uncle hated the name
Brandon.

Jared
"I was named after a character in a 70's mini-series called 'The Seekers'
that my parents saw on televison. I'm too scared to research it."

Jamie
"I was named 'James' after uncles on each of my parent's sides of the family
in a mostly-successful attempt to placate various matriachs. And since the neighborhood bully 'Jimmy' knocked around my 6-year-old brother -- on the day I was born, mind you -- 'Jimmy' lost all appeal as a nickname. So I became 'Jamie.'

Dana
"They couldn’t come to a mutual decision on a name they liked. So they just
decided to take my aunt’s name (Yardena) and shorten it to Dana. I never got
a middle name though since they thought my last name was too long."

Deva
"My mom traveled all over the world for ten years before I was born - Deva
is Hindu."

Keith
"Well my name is Keith Jr. so I guess it's pretty self explanatory."

Michelle
"Parents loved the Beatles."

Ray

"My father lost a poker game to a Hall of Fame Green Bay Packer
linebacker and promised to name his kid after him."

Dan
"Parents chose my name because it honored my Irish heritage while
still being pronounceable in Spanish. (They were living in Mexico.)"

Greg
"I was named for my mom's ex-boyfriend."

Debi
"I think I was named after one of my mom's best friends, Deb - who was a
bridesmaid at her wedding. I do know that my mother wanted to call me
'DeeDee' - and I think my Dad told her that DeeDee is a fat girl's name.
(Thank God for fathers.)

James
"My mother's brother."

Thomas
"I'm a 3rd, named after my father, who was named after his uncle who died in Italy in WWII."

Emmy

My mother named me Emmy because she learned English by watching lots of
TV (Aaron Spelling shows were her favorite). She was pregnant with me
when she was watching the Emmy Awards show.

Bill
"Uncle's first name + Dad’s middle name = me."

Kacey
"I am the 3rd of five girls. My parents desperately wanted at least one boy.
They gave us all male names up until we were born. I believe my name was
supposed to be 'Andrew,' but I think it came down to pulling out a baby book
and reconfiguring my grandmother's Irish maiden name ('Casey') to make it my
own. There you have it: 'Kacey.'"

zenat means

my names zenat i whant knowneamsof zenat

My name is argishty and it is an armenia kings name

BETH
my name is Beth it means angel so my nick name is little ange;

I spelled my son's name after his great grandfather and his middle name from his grandfather and of course his last name of his father. What is so difficult for people in the states to remember to spell "NICOLAS" and for short it's "NIC". For all six years in elementry school they spell it 'Nicholas' or 'Nick'. I don't think it is too much to ask that the school spell his name correctly!

well Rajiv in Hindi means Lotus, my dad is a fan of Rajiv Gandhi(an Indian political leader) and i'm his NAMESAKE

Adnaan, yes thats my name. My father always loved Arabic words (we being Muslims). Means a person who lives in "Adan-a place in heaven".
Its a beautiful name, but I always had a problem with the way it was spelled on my Birth Certificate, so I started spelling it as "Adnan". And well after watching this movie and staying away from my country, I prolly am gonna keep my name as my father gave me :)

A wonderful eye opener movie, although I havent read the book yet. Shows the importance of our parents and the love they have given us all throughout, which some how in this crazy new world we seem to have forgotten.

-Adnaan.

The movie is a gist of the book, though the book is a master piece. Irfan Khan, Taabu, Kal Penn did a very good job.Never expected Kal Penn in such a serious role. The way he handled it when Irfan Khan dies, it was tremendous. I think the director went a little overboard with the sex scenes. They kind of look unnecessary.

My father named me after one of his friend's daughter. He kind of liked the name. It means a flower and its after Goddess of wealth in Hindu mythology.

Disappointing....the original book is much better!

I have just seen the movie yesterday in Sydney & very disappointed! The storyline is great & I must say that the actual book is much better than the movie! The direction & dialogues are not upto standard! Why bother taking two non-bengalis as Bengali characters/roles when there are several bengali good actors/ actresses? Tabbu's & Irfan's pronounciation were appauling & emotionless! I found the sex scenes were bit unessesary too, specially when the girl became naked all of a sudden at golden night!

Mita (meaning of my name is 'friend' which was given by my grandma).

Lauren's just a name that my parents agreed upon. My mom didn't think it was that popular at the time? Silly.

My middle name Kate, is after my great-grandma Catherine who immigrated from Ireland. From what I understand, everyone called her Kate, and she seems like she was pretty cool, leaving everything behind to start a new life in the states at the age of 19.

I just saw the movie & it's sooo good! I can't wait 'till Kal Penn teaches at UPenn next Spring. He better give lectures elsewhere in Philly, or I'll just have to find a way to sit in on those classes. :)

Jason is Greek and means "Brave" or "Courageous". My middle name is Singh which means "Lion" or "Lion-hearted" and my last name is Sidhu, which indicates the area of my ancestral village in the Punjab. So my name literally translates to "Courageous Lion of the Sidhus". When I was born in Vancouver in 1971, my mom (who was also born in Vancouver) had actually not heard of the name Jason. It really wasn't very common back then.

I loved the movie! It is only showing in one theatre in Orlando, FL. I saw it on a Sunday afternoon and there were lots of people in the theatre. Everyone was talking about it as they were leaving. It is one of those movies that makes you think for days. I really identified with Gogol.

My name "Khushi" means Happiness and I think gives me a worthwhile purpose - to spread the cheer around.

Namesake is playing in Michigan in Birmingham.

- Khushi, MI

When I was younger, I told my mother that I wanted to change my name because I thought it was too common.
She then tearfully explained to me that she named me David because it means beloved. She said I was precious to her before I was every even born.

I'll never forget that.

Hi,

When will this movie come out in Iowa?

Indu Bala daughter of Narinder Kumar.
My father said he heard it once when he was younger and had always wanted to name his daughter Indu Bala. Growing up with the name like Indu, you can imagine the teasing I got. In high school I was embarrased by the name so much that I told everyone to call me Ashley--after my favorite soap opera character, much to my father's dismay. He really didn't like it, he said it wasn't me--unique. Luckily by the end of the school year I realized the same thing and went back to Indu. It's odd but now my name gives me strength and confidence. The name Indu means "moon" in Sanskrit and my middle name, Bala, means "girl". Indu Bala = Moon Girl. I love my name and I love that it came from my father.

I was supposed to be "Robert Jr." after my dad, but someone forgot to tell my chromosomes... After some hasty rethinking, I became "Robin" after my dad instead (and happily NOT "Roberta"--6 years later there was a girl named Roberta at my school who was the sort of "model child" other children instinctively detest!)

Interesting name story.

When my mom was pregnant with me everyone said she was having a boy. So, they gave me the name John, after my father. Well, to their surprise the boy turned out to be a girl. So, I'm Lisa named after Ms. Gabor's character on the TV show "Green Acres". My middle name is quite unique -it's half of the original last name of my paternal grandmother (my father's attempt to try to keep the family name). The orginial name is Bearballsingh. The nurse misspelled the name so my middle name is Birball. I've tried to research both paternal lastnames. We do stem from India and Africa. Found the origin of the African side but I don't know where in India we are from on both my maternal and paternal side.

In honor of my brother, who has been dead for 60 years:
When he was 3, he loved the old lady next door, who had some strange, old-fashioned name. My mom & dad swore he said these very words: "I'm not going to call you that, because it isn't beautiful like you are. I'm going to call you Susie Jennifer. And furddermore, when I have a baby sister, her name is going to be Susie Jennifer." My mom was pregnant at the time, and they immediately started calling the fetus by this name. I could have been a boy named Susie!

As an African-American I often wondered about my name "George Allen". No one in my family was named "George Allen". It wasn't until an uncle died that I read the his full name was "Winton George Allen Washington". I only knew him as "Winton Washington".

George Allen Williams
P.S. I am now searching where "Williams" came from?

I want to see the movie! Why isn't it ANYWHERE in Michigan???
