OK. It was a really good movie. The acting was superb and I thought the plot was unique and never seen it done...so well. Like, "Knocked UP", it takes a look at pregnancy and relationships in a whole new way.
Like the movie "Waitress", the heroine is pregnant and on a fast crash course of life discovery. That is all good. Hurray for Hollywood for stepping out of the box.
Now the flip side: Remember I have been a social worker most of my life...I think I have seen it all. I say that carefully, because if I say I have seen it all, right around the corner comes some bizarre freakin sad situation...that I have never seen before. And somethings you just never get used too.
Want to smack the parents in this movie. Surprised? Yes, they were cool, and they seem to support her decisions pretty well. But...
I have worked with adoption agencies. People who put an add in Penny Saver, may have money, but sometimes it is a red flag. An agency does a back ground check. They do lots of investigation.
The Dad did not ask the right questions. He went with Juno to meet the couple. But from there he was a pile of shit bump on the log. The lawyer and couple were in controll of that situation.
OK. Juno is 16. She is making some huge choices that will effect her whole life. Seldom do we know everthing at 16, and at my age...I don't know much at all. I just have feelings.
She says, no, I don't need compensation. I am not selling a baby. Well, I think that no one is ever selling a baby, but, what agencies and prospective parents can do is offer a two year scholarship to a college or trade school. They can also send Juno to Disneyland with friends for a week, after her ordeal is over. She is being overly self sacrificing and everyone is OK with it. Who is in her corner? I don't think her family is rich. If an agency or a lawyer were involved on her behalf...it would have been a more balanced negotiation.
She also votes for a closed adoption. I can understand her feelings at the time. But what if 5 years from now, the adoptive Mother is dying of cancer and a change of custody must be determined? Five years from now, Juno might be wealthy, married, have a child or two of her own. Shouldn't she be informed at this point of a serious situation involving her child?
Again, everyone just shruggs this off in the movie.
Baby's have fingernails. At this point I am running my fingernails down the TV screen wanting to tear up the writer and director.
OK. Juno is smart. So where is the sex education coming from in her high school? From her parents? Also, if there is an opps. Let's say a condom breaks, that happened to a friend of mine. There is a morning after pill. Can a morning after pill raise controversy? Hey, there are no fingernails yet, or heartbeat, or hopefully no conception. There are a few other options like menstrual extraction...for the 1 week late syndrom. The doctors do not confirm or deny a pregnancy, they just do a routine D and C.
Instead, of telling Juno what a trouper she is and such a smart little thing. Let's get her some real help.
You guys all must know some teen age girls. Lets push for better contraception and better education.????
People.
It was a good movie. For the most part. Thank God they allowed her to have a spinal block...even though she might have wanted to endure all that pain...and suffering.
She was noble and brave and I have respect for all that. It is the adults...I want to smack around for just a second.
