I didn't read Night Watch before I have seen the first movie (in its Russian edit), and I have to say, it was still comprehensible. However, reading the book made lots of motifs in the movie more clear. On the other hand, it made me wonder why a director takes some perfectly cinemographic moments from the book and makes something other out of it - making the result not better, but worse.

As for Day Watch - it has even less to do with the stories of the book. Especially the finale is a big deviation, which is quite permissible for artistic license. However, after the movie's finale I seriously doubt that FOX will be able to make a third movie without losing connectivity with the first two. And this is what I am afraid of - that they will make a rather mediocre Americanized sequel.
