THE NAMESAKE is the story of the Ganguli family whose move from Calcutta to New York evokes a lifelong balancing act to meld to a new world without forgetting the old. Though parents Ashoke and Ashima (Irrfan Khan, Tabu) long for the family and culture that enveloped them in India, they take great pride in the opportunities their sacrifices have afforded their children. Paradoxically, their son Gogol (Kal Penn) is torn between finding his own unique identity without losing his heritage. Even Gogol’s name represents the family’s journey into the unknown.

Dear Fox,
Please don't make me (and all the Mira Nair fans + Kal Penn fans all over US) beg for the release date. Give it up already! I am dying to see this movie.

Hello,

My name is Peter Gray, and I am currently a sophomore at Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts. I am writing to you as the Publicity Chair of our South Asian Students Association. Every year, for spring semester, we as a cultural organization have screenings for various movies which we feel the Clark community might enjoy and learn from. This year we chose The Namesake as one of the movies we would like to show.

As part of the copyright policies, I am writing to ask for your studio's permission to allow us to screen the movie. If there are costs involved with copyright issues, please email me back with the details and I will start working on it immediately.

My email address is pegray@clarku.edu

Our organization will greatly appreciate it if you allow us to show The Namesake to the Clark campus. We are truly excited for the movie.

Thank you for your time and help.

I saw this wonderful film about 2 weeks ago (March) in Washington, DC. at one of only two theatres which show foreign films in DC. I almost missed it, as most excellent foreign films are only shown here for a week - if we're lucky, 2 weeks! It is very frustrating, but much more frustrating for those of you who have been unable to find it playing anywhere close to you. I hope it will be shown at a theatre near to you, as it is an excellent film. Every character interacted brilliantly.

And when oh when will we see the movie here in the UK???
The book was great and lived up to all my expectations.
Anne Dungey

please release this movie everywhere our parents would like to see it as well

It was a great movie. Tabu played great role.

Baij From Boston

Mira Nair has provided a very lopsided view of the Bengali Psyche in Jhumpa Lahiri's Namesake. Namesake is the story of the tribulations, the conflicts and the dilemma of Ashoke & Ashima Ganguli, uprooted from their familiar Kolkata and displaced in an alien world. Nair has failed to see through Ashima and Ashoke's feelings and emotions and in the process made a caricature of the Bengali trying hard to establish his identity in a world totally different, inadept at understanding traditional values. Irfan Khan as Ashoke Ganguli has done an excellent job and seems to be a perfect choice. He has very successfully portrayed the Bengali inflections while speaking English. Kal Penn as Gogol was a perfect choice. But Tabbu's Ashima was an absolute failure especially in the first half of the film. She lacked the softness , combined with the forthright, a quintessential quality of the middle class Bengali intellectual. Nevertheless Tabbu proved her skill as a powerful actress in the 2nd half of the film. Probably it was Nair's obsession in presenting Kolkata her squalor , her crowds her multifaceted milieu and the essentially Bengali wit in the common man could not do justice to Lahiri's novel which stands in a class apart.
Thus the film failed to project how the immigrant Bengali has adjusted with the Amercian and carved a niche for himself in the Intellectual world. It seemed as if the Bengalis are only concerned about establishing their Bengali culture and that they have have no other concern as consensus individuals committed to society.

I was really fascinated and was amazed how wonderful this film is and was happy to have you people see it through the wildaboutmovies. I myself is an actress so when not working I like to enjoy these free passes that are given and hope you continue sending me them as I really enjoy it. The acting was really something and at times I did feel sad for the guy loosing his father. This is a film that lets you want to know what the whole life of Gogol who at first did not get a good explanation at first to why he had to be that name even though it was under a writer and that his parents had to name him at the hospital fast. The culture is different from us and Canada and they had no choice but later after his fathers death he later found out and gone back to his name after those short relationships he had with woman. This story seems so real.

Just so you know, don't ever reveal important aspects of the movie, like who dies. Some of us scan comments about the movie to get interested in it, but haven't actually seen it yet.

As of March 24th, still no wide release of The Namesake. We live in Atlanta GA and the movie isn't playing ANYWHERE here. This is ridiculous, it is a complete waste of money for FOX to just sit on the movie like this, given the great reviews and obvious demand.

the movie IS playing in Atlanta. go to movietickets.com you dumbo. and...if you're too dumb to do that, go to the TARA theatre off at the corner of Cheshire Bridge Rd and Lavista Rd
retard.

This movie is opening on Friday: 3/30 at the Drexel Gateway in Columbus Ohio! See you at the movies!

Cleveland is a major city. I am so disappointed. How are we supposed to see the film? What's with Fox Searchlight?

The nearest theatre playing this movie is 25 miles away , in Washington DC. Please have a wider release.

The movie was incredible. Mira Nair definitely executed Jhumpa Lahiri's work in a brilliant way. Bravo Mira!!

Hi there,

I know many people including myself, who would like to see this movie, but it is not playing anywhere. The trailer looks impressive and the reviews have been generous as well. I'm dissapointed that it did not focus on a mainstream audience with a wide release, considering the popularity of Kal Penn, the current interest in Bollywood and other South Asian actors (Aishwarya Rai, Parminder Nagra, Naveen Andrews, etc.). Please promote this movie to a mainstream audience with a wider release!!

WANT WIDE RELEASE!!!!!!!!!! please

I would like to see this very much

I would like to see this love story which shows how different cultures handle living in entirely foreign
cities and countries. This movie should be interesting
and enlighting. Please send me a pass.

I would like to see this movie because I've read the story, written by Jhumpa Lahiri and as a person who migrated to the US from India, I feel I can relate to it. I've been desperately waiting for this movie ever since its production was announced. I am trying to locate a theater near my place that is playing this movie, unfortunately it is not being played here.

I would like to see this movie for the acting value this topic is not always easy to relay unto the viewers mind.I love India. Also I live with ADD so story telling is better for me in a visual genre. Also this movie supports my life long dedication to remove the racial barriers around the world as they have been for me.Its amazing what GOD can do with a great story!!!! Thankyou from Nova Scotia Canada!!

I would love to see this movie, but it is a limit showing.
