From the east to west coasts and everywhere in between people have great things to say about this chilling melodrama; here's a taste of what's out there:
“‘Notes on a Scandal’ is a nice mug of poisoned eggnog for the holiday season – a movie so smart and entertaining you almost don’t feel its chill sicken your bones. ‘Notes’ offers yet another stunning Judi Dench performance. There are moments of tension to make you crawl up the back of your seat: a highbrow suspense freak-out.”
– Ty Burr, BOSTON GLOBE
"If you like your films strong, this one is not to be missed, boasting Oscar-caliber performances from Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett."
– Ruthe Stein, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
“One thing that marks the dark brilliance of ‘Notes on a Scandal’ is the level of the acting, but that is just part of a larger issue: its vision. I can’t remember a film that sees the here and now more precisely, one that offers total believability in the tone and motive of its characters and then goes further, showing us a whole and completely recognizable world. Director Richard Eyre and writer Patrick Marber have extraordinary powers of observation. This is a movie about sharks and little fishes.”
– Stephen Hunter, THE WASHINGTON POST
“‘Notes on a Scandal’ is a complex morality tale. A brilliantly acted drama, so well acted that it is Oscar-bound.”
– Bruce Kirkland, TORONTO SUN

I just saw Notes on a Scandal last night. I don't know what all the hoo ha is about Dame Judy smoking. It was hardly an ad for Virginia Slims, more a picture of a old sad frustrated lonely woman who understandably reaches for a fag. More a cautionary tale than a plug for big tobacco!. Anyway, enough of that red herring, the film is brilliant. It shows real understanding and compassion for all the characters. At last a film that isn't all black and white, good and evil with a syrupy ending. Only the brits could have done it.
