As Hollywood's premiere indie movie studio, Searchlight reaches out to its audiences through an array of trail-blazing films. But we also consider it our duty to explore with you -- the viewer -- the indie film genre itself. What is independent film? What is the state of it in 2007 -- and what does the future hold? What in people's opinions have been both the high points and the low points in the years since the independent film was born? And what do indie films really have to offer each of us?

Searchlight employee Lorenzo (Loren) Schneider set out on a cross-country trip to dig up answers to just those questions. He spoke to people like you -- in places ranging from Miami to Park City to Detroit to Reno. From indie film and art houses to festivals and film schools, in towns and cities spanning the population scale, Loren interviewed theater owners, filmgoers -- or just about anyone who had an opinion to share.

And he received a lot of interesting answers! So check back soon and absorb the details of his three-week fact-finding mission through video footage of his many conversations with Joe Q. Public. And on an ongoing basis, starting right about -- NOW! -- Loren will venture to movie sets, film festivals and other locales to pick the brains of filmmakers, critics, actors and who knows who else on the same subject.

Stay tuned! And many, MANY thanks to Mercury for their generous sponsorship of his three-week trek!

Dear Searchlight,
I WANT TO WORK FOR YOU!
It seem like I'm the only contributing to the State of the Indy, and you have to admit I know what I'm talking about. So wouldn't it make sense to bring me on the team. Heck I'll make the Starbuck's runs. I don't mind. I just want in and I'm willing to do anything...

The critics got it right this week in proclaiming No Country for Old Men, the Best Film of the Year. Most of the opinions that critics announce through out the world, I tend to turn a cheek to. It's when they take a change, say what they truly feel about a film and not care about who they work for or who is buttering their bread. I'm sorry, but the worst film of the year has been #1 for 3 weeks straight. It's as if the Conservative Republicans all got together and conspired to make national Treasure 2 #1. But what really hurts is to see reviews praising this so called film. Cage is a brilliant actor. Can we finally get this man a script in his hand, that doesn't have flaming skulls or imitation Indiana jones characters in them. The only hope we have this week is Juno. Our savior. Juno is one the best films made in 2007. Thats an accomplishment, considering the powerful year that film had in 07. Hats off to Jason Reitman and the cast and crew of Juno. Don't get me wrong. Critics love this film. If it wasn't for the critics, this film would be a future cult classic with a solid fan best. Instead, Juno has Oscar best all over it. So if you haven't seen Juno, go and see it this week. You'll love it from beginning to end.

If it wasn't for the critics, this film would be a future cult classic with a solid fan BASE. Instead, Juno has Oscar BUZZ all over it. So if you haven't seen Juno, go and see it this week. You'll love it from beginning to end.

(you can consider the typo's a subliminal message at BEST)

I write reviews to promote diverse, meaningful and inspiring films on my blog. (Reel Inspiration dot Blogspot)Our members are trying to send a message that we want more of these films by supporting them with our attendance.

Our 2007 Best Films list includes four Fox Searchlight indie films: Juno, The Darjeeling Limited, Once and The Namesake.

Congratulations on these great films!

Please, let me know when "Under the Same Moon" premiers in Tucson, AZ. So I can get my review up before opening weekend.

Thanks,

I feel like this is my personal site that I can post my opinions, because no one else is....
It's like Meisner's quote, " I wish the stage was like a tight rope, so the incompitant would never dare step foot on my stage'

Film should be viewed in the same limelight

CAN WE BUILD THIS SITE UP A LITTLE STRONGER. FILM NEEDS THE SUPPORT, THE OSCARS LOOK WEAK. WHEN THE LOS ANGELES TIMES IS CLAIMING SWEENY TODD IS THE FRONT RUNNER FOR BEST PICTURE, THATS SCARY. THERE WERE SO MANY QUALITY FILMS THIS YEAR. AND THE BUZZ IS AROUND A BURTON/DEPP POPCORN MUSICAL BLOOD BATH. COME ON. BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOUR DEAD, MICHAEL CLAYTON, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, JUNO,THE TEN, HECK EVEN REIN OVER ME WAS BRILLIANT. I'M SORRY I REFUSE TO BUY INTO A BURTON FILM AS BEST PICTURE. MIGHT AS WELL PUT BRETT RATNERS RUSH HOUR 3 IN THE MIX. AND DON'T GET ME WRONG, I TAKE MY HAT OFF TO RATNER, ESPECIALLY HIS GUEST SPOT ON ENTOURAGE... "OKAY DRAMA, YOU CAN BE THE BUS DRIVER" BUT OSCAR CONTENDER? NO, DON'T WATER MY FILM INDUSTRY DOWN! DONT SELL ME ON A FILM THAT WILL HAVE ACTION FIGURES RUNNING THROUGH AN ASSEMBLY LINE. THE STUDIOS DO A GREAT JOB IN GETTING THE MEDIA TO CREATE BUZZ AROUND THERE UP AND COMING FLOPS. WE HAVE TO HIT $100, 000,000 IT'S FIRST WEEK OUT, BEFORE FILM LOVERS GET THE WORD OUT THAT IT IS A HORRIBLE FILM, OR YOU CAN WAIT TILL DVD. USE THAT CRAP AROUND YOUR HORROR GENER OR YOUR NEXT KIDDIE FLICK, BUT NOT ON MY OSCAR NOMINATIONS. IT'S OKAY TO PROFIT, I GET IT, IN ORDER TO SEE BRILLIANCE. THE STUDIOS HAVE TO MAKE THEIR MONEY OFF OF CRAP FILM THAT PLEASES THE IGNORANT. GIVE CREDIT, WHERE CREDIT IS DUE. AND IN RETURN. I'LL GIVE YOU MY $12 TO WATCH DEPP PRANCE AROUND IN WHITE FACE AND PERFORM HIS WICKED BALLETS...

The brilliantly sad factor of The State of Indy Film is all year long there has been beautiful performances and suburbly structered films that have not been recgonized by the simple minded average film goer, who will rave about American Gangster yet complain that it may have been aliitle to slow and has never heard of Before the Devil Knows Your Dead or even Serpico, which is the blue print to the powerful performance driven Ridlley Scott film. Indy film needs a stronger audience to take back the art of cinema and story telling, away from the spineless studios who are afriad of taking a chance and speaking the truth against the fear and ignorance that the Govt has instilled in our society. The art of Film is a beautiful gift to translate stories. We have to strenghten the core of this art and take back what is rightfully ours.
