Bob,
I just saw your Young at Heart with my sons, who are at the other end of the spectrum, age-wise (ages 12 and 16), though similar in spirit to your singing friends. They, too, are influenced by these same songs and also come "alive" on the stage. (Check out their own songs on their web site on myspace.com/goldencarr, if you feel so inclined.) I've always been amazed at how therapeutic the actual act of singing can be to all of us, but as a therapist (I work with teens mostly)your work has got me thinking about how I can manage to exploit that into some sort of program for the troubled teens I see ("exploit" in a strictly positive way, here). Many of the songs you've chosen for the seniors to sing seem to have a dual meaning, as you said in an interview. As in, were they written for old people to sing? Yet I'm wondering if they were written for young people with acute and/or chronic mental illnesses to sing, as well. So so interesting to me.
Anyway, you're an inspiration to me, as well as that beautiful COOL COOL group of people in the chorus you directed. Thanks. Liz Golden, Philly
Well, just another letter to say what a joyful, touching, beautiful film! I also laughed and cried the entire time. What an incredible person you are to give those people such purpose and joy!
Hi,BOb
I have seen the film today, and felt in love irremediably with you. :-) SOrry for my english, I´m spanish. When do you come to Europe? I will go everywhere to meet you and take a good beer with you. Kisses,

Merci Bob de votre travail, de la joie, de l'émotion et de la force de vie qui en résulte. Bravo et encore merci.

Dear Bob, Dear Young@Heart,
Let me introduce myself to you all...I've been singing since I landed on the planet Earth 54 years ago.
I had the pleasure and honor of seeing your doc film shortly before
Christmas 2008 and I was so moved that I was swept into an ocean
of laughter and tears. Shortly thereafter, I was asked to found a
German retiree choir and I said, "Sure, as long as I can do my own music."
So here I am with 25 singers who want to sing Pop, Rock, Punk and all that
Jazz in English. Our kick-off begins Januar 22nd and I thank you all for
your inspiration and zest! I can't believe that the German retirees in
Tübingen were so moved by your music.
I will keep in touch and wish you all the best in 2009!
Yours,
Jane Rudnick
I watched the movie tonight at Tokyo in Japan.
I laughed and cry a lot at their soulful voices and fell in love with your strait eyes!!
When will you come to Japan?I'd like to take my 75years old friends of neighborhoods.
Now I can feel 'Future is bright'.
Thank you!!
Saw the film last night and it was awesome! You did an amazing job with the singers! Do you ever put on shows in Canada?
My 8 yr old, yes, just 8, loved it as well!
We were hoping it was playing again tonight so we could bring our oldest daughter and her friends, but with no luck.. She will have to wait to see it in the theater...
Thank you, Bob Cilman!!!!
My husband, daughter and I saw your film, "Young at Heart" last evening and it was so amazing! You have done such a tremendous job with the chorus.
Thank you for all your effort with this wonderful endeavor. If you get a chance to come to Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada I would love to attend your performance.
I have never seen my daughter cry at a movie before and she did several times during "Young at Heart", as did I. The audience applauded several times, as well (which happens rarely).
Thank you, again...
Hope
Dear Bob and Young at Heart Chorus Members
Thank you for the wonderful life lesson. Last night I took my daughters, ages 11 and 12, to a screening of your wonderful movie at Messiah College in Grantham, Pa. Audience members, from teenagers to seniors, laughed, cried, and cheered. No one wanted to leave the theater when it was over!
My children lost two grandparents within six months of one another and have felt a deep sense of loss ever since. They are almost afraid of "aging." Yet your strength, determination, and courage demonstrate to them and all of us that the show must go on and we must make something out of every day.
May God continue to bless you richly for the way in which you have touched the lives of others.
Laurie Brown
Saw the movie tonight & fell in love with you all. I will recommend it to my family & friends. Thank you & bless you all for sharing your gift.

Dear Bob and Young at heart singers,
It is Sunday August 23 2008, and I am in Rome Italy. I have just finished watching your show that was presented on the Cult channel. I had plans to go out, but I got to watching your show instead, and it warmed my heart, filled my day with warmth, love , laughter, song and tears for I became part of the group for a little while.
God bless you and the work that you are doing, God bless all your singers, old members and new ones to come along the way, singing is beautiful, and the greatest thing, one really doesn't have to have a great voice to do so, just the wanting to sing.
Enjoyed you all so very much, keep going and sing for all of those who can't no longer.
Ciao e Tanti Auguri

My daughter and I went to see your film a week ago. We laughed and cried throughout. It was wonderful! We also enjoyed how you, Mr. Cilman, are so egoless! Marvelous!
My husband died in February of complications from dementia. He was a singer, teacher, and swim coach.
We probably couldn't have seen the film while he was alive -- his brain was going and it was depressing for us to observe.
But your film celebrates these older folks who still have their mental faculties. What a blessing!
thank you!
3 - 11 year old BOYS AND 1 MOM JUST WATCHED YOUR FILM!!!!!!!
We literally just returned home from Young@Heart and I had to look you up and tell you what an impact your work/film had on my son and me!!
I work for a non-profit called RSVP (Retired Senior and Volunteer Program) in Santa Cruz, Ca. I have been working with seniors (finding them volunteer positions for local non-profits) it has touched my soul where it had not been touched before.
Having seen this film and to see and hear what you have done for this community really brings me to my knees! Your film opened up a dialog with the boys and me that may have never been shared. And I thank you profusely for that. During one of the 5 times I cried...my son Lukas put his head on my shoulder....priceless...
How can I find out when you may be in the San Francisco or New York area (I'm originally from there and go back often)Please feel free to email regina@baymoon.com
Keep up your most enlightening work!! Regina
Beautiful Gift
Thank you, Bob Cilman, for the gift of this precious choir and the souls in it. I just got back from seeing the movie and I am emailing every member of my family to go see it. My daughter works at an assisted living facility and we are trying now to make arrangements to take as many of the residents as we can to see the movie during its 2-night run.
Many, many blessings to you for doing what you do and hugs to each of the wonderful people you work with.

Enjoyed the movie soooo much and really appreciate the warm selfless heart of Bob Cilman and all his works and efforts to bring joy to the hearts of so many! This movie should be shown in every nursing home and high school as a requirement throughout the country! Every age can use the reminder that age is just a number! Linda W. Michigan
Bob:
What an amazing film, and an even more incredible gift that has been given to us all through this group.
I directed my own Young At Heart Choir for several years in a church, and even though we didn't sing tunes by Sonic Youth or Coldplay, the joy I received every week working with these people was more than I could have ever imagined.
Good for you. Good for the singers and musicians. And most of all - great for the rest of us that see the power of music, the results of hard work, and the promise that there will always be a song.

Awesome! Unbelievably moving, entertaining and inspiring! I didn't want it to end!

Hi Bob!
Can I call you uncle, too?
You transcend the word "love". Thank you for the wonders and gifts of all the chorus members. Glad you took another chance for this documentary. I saw your film tonight and walked out of the movie chanting, "yes I can, yes I can can"! You have a spirit seldom seen, full of hope and compassion, and you ROCK!!!
Congratulations,
Frannie in Florida
My daughter and I went to see the film this past week. What a wonderful experience. I laughed and cried. I am urging others to see the film.
What a tremendous person you are, Bob, to work with these precious people.

Hi Bob. Saw your film tonight. Just enjoyed it so much. This has been going on for so long and here in Orlando Florida on May 30th 2008, it finally made its way to us. You did a great job putting this film together as did the wonderful people you worked with. I am ninety one and can't sing, but as my daughter who saw the movie with me tonight, says, Yes you can, can, can. I still have goose bumps and so much love for the people who performed so beautifully. Martha Orlando, Fl
We saw Young at Heart yesterday and really didn't know what to expect but so very glad we did it! Bob, I think you must also be a psychologist or how else could you deal with this group who, I'm sure, are not always delightful! However, you have a knack of getting the best. And, I thought all the other thoughts that everyone has already mentioned but my thoughts focused on the psychological good it does for the participants and also the viewers! You can't buy that. Then there's the bridge created between generations which this country needs to badly. Another bridge was expressed too at the performance for those incarcerated - you could just hear their thoughts being explored! I'm sure you could easily get groups all over the country in every big and small town - seniors need this outlet so much and I think you would find it embraced everywhere. While you could not be everywhere, maybe the music and arrangements could be purchase by groups - one they find their own director. Is that possible at all? None would ever be as good as you are. But, I do think you need to sell the videos and that's what I'm looking for now and hope it's in my budget because I can think of a whole bunch of seniors I'd like to share it with, and I know because I are one!!!!! Pat Palmer
I saw this film with friends in Ct. We have also visited Northhampton, MA.
Bob, you come across as such a caring and connected person to your group. They are lucky to have you. When I left the theatre, I felt younger than my 62 years. Keep up the good work. What a mitzvah you are doing.
Hi Bob,
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I saw the movie last night. I was surprised; I was inspired; I was humbled, I was captivated. It made me laugh, cry, think, and more. I can, can, can - yes, I can!
Judy
I saw Young@Heart. God bless all the people in it, especially the 93-year-old woman that the film was dedicated to. I really enjoyed the movie. My daughter took me along with her 18-year-old daughter. See her post. Her son is a drummer. Good job Bob!

ps. would love to hear more about how the group started, etc. keep us posted. it would be lovely to have sequels of your overseas tours....just a thought : )
Here is how you loose a train .... experiance on the Capitol Limited from Washington DC to Chicago @ Toledo Station. Its around sunrise when the train nears Toledo - before getting to the platform the train has to "manuver" through a series of MANUAL switches to get to the right track leading to the right platform.sexy lingerie There are a lot of switches and a lot of tracks - someone from the engine gets down and throws the switches for the train to get on the right track - and screws up. After moving for about 5 mins the train stops I am awake by now and walk to the door where the conductor is leaning out talking on a hand held radio - all sexy costumes voices are calm - someone observes (paraphrasing) "We are in the rail yard, this wont go to the station" , another voice "well lingerie lets back track, maybe one of the switches was wrong" - then they got a go ahead to go back and we moved back about a mile and then the switches were thrown again, correctly, to get to the station.
Today, May 18, 2008, is a day I will treasure forever. I got my 80-year-old mom out of the house and my busy 18-year-old daughter for a few hours to join me, age 53, to see the documentary Young@Heart. Pure joy and contentment was had by all! We "3G's" - 3 generations of 3 girls can't wait to see Young@Heart perform live in the Los Angeles area...First order of business, provide the drummer with an entire drumset and a comfy throne to sit on. He was amazing on just a snare and one cymbal!
All Young@Heart members past and present - YOU ROCK!

Hi Bob,
I saw your film tonight and was very impressed with the way you could "work the crowd" with sensitivity, but effectiveness. I love to sing and honestly was looking for a chorus to sing the kind of songs you taught your chorus, but couldn't find one. The song selection was really impressive! As I was watching the film, I was thinking about how I could have such a impact on others - my mom is in a nursing home and of course I thought about the residents there.
How did you get started with this? I recently retired as an Elementary Principal (almost a year now) and although I work part time, I am looking for something to do that is my passion. Singing is a passion of mine! I wonder how I could incorporate singing into some kind of work/play - your film has gotten me thinking about this.
Do you every perform/come to the Philadelphia area?
It would be great if you could reply, but I understand you must be quite busy right now. Kudos to a great accomplishment!
Cheryl in Philly
P.S. I got a kick out of the way you obviously enjoyed the performance yourself!
Dear Bob,
Thank you is just not a strong enough response for how grateful my wife and I are for what you've done with Young@Heart. You have given all of us a gift through this chorus by making it beautiful and affirming and most of all, honest. We watched this documentary and laughed and cried (really sobbed) and fell instantly in love with all of these wonderful and amazing people! We decided afterwards that we will move to Northhampton when we get older and join the chorus, if you'll have us, because there can't be a better destination for a life well lived. Please tell your chorus that they are bringing joy and hope to everyone who sees them and sees this film. Please thank them profoundly for what they are doing. And thank you for making it happen.

Hi.When The Young at Heart Chorus was 1st getting started in the early 80's they rehearsed in the dining area of the building, where they resided. Bobby & The Young @ Heart Chorus would rehearse after lunch. I had the opportunity to see the Young@Heart's early begginings because, I was a bus boy/table cleaner at the 'elders' meal site. At that time even as a casual observer,I could see the laid back yet exuberant style that Bobby brought to the rehersals & in return he received, the 110% effort of the Young @ Heart Chours.
Bob & I have been friends for 33 years although our paths in life have taken divergent paths. One definition of the word divergent is-"departing from convention". Well my fellow readers I've yet to see the flick however, I am glad to know that this phenomenon is getting the recognition that those of here in 'hamp know, it so richly deserves. My thanks to Bobby & all past, preesent & future members of the Young at Heart Chorus. Peace,
dan.lan@Comcast.net
Congratulations on a beautiful, moving, fantastic film. I came away from the film (saw it by myself while my kids were at school) thinking that that was the best film I've ever seen. Best film ever made. I felt content, I felt life affirmed, I felt elated, I felt blessed, I felt like screaming it from the rooftops but quietly. Well, the internet is our best rooftop, so later that night when I got home, I vaguely cherry picked about 50 of the most wonderful people on my email list and let them know my feelings about the film. I didn't want to seem bossy, but I told them they simply must trust me and go. (if they were to have a negative response, well, they'd be eliminated from my email list, I can't imagine).
I came home and told my boyfriend all about it (I'm 52, was unceremoniously, but fortuntely dumped by my ex) and told him how blessed I felt. I mentioned that while watching the film I really thought about wanting to marry you, yes you Mr. Director of wonderful film, but realized it would be far too complicated and besides you were already married, and besides I was certainly happy with my own love, so, I'd be content to simply be appreciative and admiring and everlastingly grateful to you for pulling this group together, giving them what you have, and then sharing them with the rest of us.
Lastly I want to let you know. (should I stay or should I go, I'm telling you this film inhabits me now completely) I tried to get my loved ones into the theater to see it with me, laugh with me, cry with me, the very next day after I'd seen it. It was not possible. So, it will be my Mother's Day gift/demand that we all go to see the film together.
Keep up the good work, please share my praise with your choir and can't wait to see you on tour sometime, if you make it back to Los Angeles. I guess I just missed the concert last week. Oh well.
Sincerely,
Judy Silk
Hi,
I haven't seen this movie yet because I live in Sweden and it is not here yet. But I have the cd "mostly live" and I truly love it. I am longing for the movie to get here! You, Bob, the musicians and the chorus, you must have been sent from God to bring peace and happiness in people's heart. Please, please, send the movie to Sweden!

Hi Bob,
Just saw the film in Pleasantville, NY. God bless you and god bless all of those wonderful singers! It was so wonderful!
Yes, we can can! My heart is so full! Can't wait to tell everyone about this fabulous choir! The Dylan song in the prison was wonderful and of course Coldplay was great! Thank you all for sharing and most importantly saying that the show must go on!

I saw Young @ Heart tonight and it was one of the most uplifting movies I have ever seen. I laughed, I cried, I sang and I danced. I celebrated life, these folks are fabulous and when I grow up (I am 57) I want to be just like them. I will recommend this movie to everyone I know. Bob Cilman you are a wonderful human being.....I love you.
Dear Bob Cilman,
After being so grateful to be in the audience at the Wilshire Theater last week, I went to see the film last night. I am still soaked with the energy of it and the tears and the deep, deep joy. You are clearly part of this energy....there is a soul of the chorus which combines your spirit, your creative abilities, and the ability to pick songs that come to life, even when neither you nor the chorus thinks they have a chance. I was so very moved by the realization, that while it is inevitable that people will pass away in the course of their participation, the music and the ability to expand their horizons to include some very new ideas represented in the lyrics of the music you choose, not only gives members the new ideas, it launches them into an entirely new paradigm of thinking. This alone, extends their lifespan on multi faceted levels.
I have a friend who has written many folk songs and who came up through the coffee houses of Greenwich Village with Judy Collins, Bob Dylan, and the likes. One of his songs (my friend, Tom Paxtons') is a tribute to all these friends who sang and wrote together in those days. A line from it says:
"We're gonna go out singin' when we go",,,,,,,,, and clearly, this group is doing just that. From that perspective, what more could be asked of life?

I went to the Young at Heart concert last night and did not want it to end! it was the best concert I have ever been to!
I was wondering why they aren't selling t-shirts or something. I would have loved a souvenir.
i work in fashion and could design and print mass quantities if anyone knows how to get in touch with the manager, etc.
Also, there was no program for the show. my friends and I wanted to see pictures of each member of the chorus and of the band (which, by the way, is fantastic) and read a little bio. about each of them.
please send contact info. if you have it.
thanks!

What a fantastic group of people! This is a great start for a desperately needed paradigm shift in our society. I work for the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging and went with co-workers (an 83 year old and two thirty-somethings) to see your film and we absolutely loved it! Keep it up... wonderful idea to pull together the generations!

Bob Cilman - Well Done!!!
I just came from seeing the movie "Younng @ Heart" before they performed on Ellen Degeneres Show and I must say I am not sure if I laughed or cried more but this movie touched my heart in every way and I was so impressed with your patience and your kindness and just fell in ove with everyone in the movie and you - you you all just stole my heart and I Thank God for you and that you made this movie - I brought my mom and my anunt and they both just adored the movie and we just talked about it all day becasue am only 43 but both of them are dealing with the age thing with their spouses and just really needed to see this to know it's all do-able and so worth it... I wish I could have gotten tickets to see the show while you were in LA becasue we certainly did not get enough of them on the Ellen show... again - I think you guys are fabulous!! I wished I could have met you - just wante to touch your hand to feel the sensitivity that comes from your heart, you are an Angel and God Blessed us with you and your amazing talent and love for theses people... I can't tell you enough how great the show was... Patti Byerly - Riverside, California... pattibrat1@aol.com
Hey, Bobby..
I just moved back to Wisconsin to help my own parents through their final years of life and, yeh, what a lot of life just keeps erupting! I haven't yet been able to see Young at Heart in its entirety, but I certainly hope to. What lucky people you have in your chorus, to have your incredible spirit directing them. When does our generation get to sing with you again, anyway?
Love and all good wishes -- Susan Hering
Just returned from seeing this at The Atlanta Film Festival with my husband (age 44), my daughter (age 12) and my son (age 8)! We all just loved it.. My daughter complained about having to go with us when we told her it was going to be about some older people singing, but after just the first scene she was very engaged and laughing along with us. My 8 yr old, yes, just 8, loved it as well!
We were hoping it was playing again tonight so we could bring our oldest daughter and her friends, but with no luck.. She will have to wait to see it in the theater...
Very well done...
When we were leaving the theater, my 8 year old said he wanted to get it on DVD!!!!
Great job... and although we live in Atlanta now, Massachusetts was home until 3 years ago... Loved the fall scenes... Miss it..
The Davenports
Go see it! And tell your parents (or children) to see it too!
I don't remember the last time that I have laughed so much during a movie. Of course, in the next shot I was wiping away tears because the movie has poignant scenes as well as hilarious ones. More than just my own reaction, watching the movie tonight (in New York City) I had the feeling that the whole audience was really loving this movie and we were a diverse bunch!
I'm 26 years young, and the movie made me miss my grandfather and his spirit when I saw some of the men depicted, and also made me realize how rarely we see old people in tv, movies. Heck, even my life is quite segregated by age--I spend my time with young people and working people, and then maybe the elderly in my family alone. This movie is a great reminder of how spirited and enlivening the elder years can be.
Saw the Young at Heart doc. at a preview here in L.A. was absolutely floored by this film. Loved every minute of it, only regret that it had to end (like life) at some point...Bob, thank you for having the vision (and fortitude) to make this come to the screen.A life affirming experience for me (I'm a kid, only 69yrs. young).
Best wishes,Faye L.
Nice job Daddy
